Sustain/Ed - Chapter 1: Sustainable Learning

(1)
Sustain/Education Learning Module The Sustain/Ed Learning Module is an educational package which augments the KS2 curriculum in the UK, offering activities which reinforce awareness of sustainability and climate action while maintaining core learning outcomes. Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 1: Sustainable Learning This chapter introduces the concept of sustainability and invites the students to think about how they have and might engage with this. Climate issues can be scary. The Learning Module aims to tackle climate anxiety by introducing inspiring change-makers, teaching sustainable solutions and hands-on science. Targets: Students discover what they already know about Sustainability and Climate Change Students design a personalised eco-diary

Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 3: People and Power In this chapter, students will learn about the history of how humans have used of energy. We compare how energy was used centuries ago and how we use it today, and think about how it has changed our society. Students will then think about the importance of access to power. Targets: Students will explore how humans have used energy to alter/improve their living conditions Students meet the Industrial Revolution and discover its significance Students investigate how we use electricity today Students build electricity grids and brainstorm how to get electricity to communities using maps

Sustain/Education Learning Module The Sustain/Ed Learning Module is an educational package which augments the KS2 curriculum in the UK, offering activities which reinforce awareness of sustainability and climate action while maintaining core learning outcomes. Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 2: Energy Human energy usage is vital to our daily lives. But what is energy? Energy makes things happen, but is hard to define because it comes in many forms. This Chapter explores where we get energy, describes how it is stored, and provides exciting examples of its use in our world. Targets: Students meet the concept that energy is never created or destroyed, only transformed Students participate in the Energy Mapping Challenge Students learn how energy is transferred through: (1) the formation of the universe, (2) the human body Students identify different forms of energy, e.g. electricity

Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 5: Renewables In this chapter, students will encounter the various innovations that enable humans to capture energy from nature to generate electricity, cleanly. Students will link energetic natural resources to different regions of the planet and will explore how a diverse energy grid can support our needs. This lesson will provide more context for the students own scientific measurements of sunlight and wind at their school. Targets: Students assess the amount of energy involved in the natural processes of the earth Students appreciate that everyone can be a scientist, engineer, and problem solver Students become engineers for the Earth Energy Company and pitch their renewable city plan

Sustain/Education Learning Module The Sustain/Ed Learning Module is an educational package which augments the KS2 curriculum in the UK, offering activities which reinforce awareness of sustainability and climate action while maintaining core learning outcomes. Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 8: Our world in 2050 In this chapter we will be playing a boardgame called 2050: a new world. Players make decisions to control how their city/region becomes more sustainable. The boardgame is a downloadable print-and-play available here, and is an excellent culmination of the learning module. https://2050anewworldgame.wixsite.com/home Targets: Students appreciate how climate solutions will vary by place and heavily depend on nearby resources Students find there is not one single solution for combating climate change, and that it will take time Students see the decisions we make today will influence the future Students learn that all the resources around us are closely connected

Sustain/Education Learning Module The Sustain/Ed Learning Module is an educational package which augments the KS2 curriculum in the UK, offering activities which reinforce awareness of sustainability and climate action while maintaining core learning outcomes. Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 7: Inventions In this chapter, students will learn about innovative ways that humans are trying to counter climate change. We will highlight exciting innovations such as: capturing carbon dioxide, electricity producing algae, reducing methane from cows/pigs, plant-based eating, electric vs petrol vehicles, energy storage, and behaviour science and how we change behaviour. Targets: Students explore the many different groups working to make our world more sustainable Students see that there are many ways to contribute to this effort - interdisciplinary learning and collaboration is key Students discover that more inventions and innovative ideas will help to protect our planet – and they can be part of these solutions

Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 6: Nature In this chapter, students will be introduced to climate diversity around our planet, and how it dictates the lifestyles of people and the habitats of animals. An emphasis will be made on how the fine balance of conditions on Earth shape the lives of plants and animals (including humans!). Students will think about the possible changes to climate and weather, why these variations matter, and what we are doing to protect the natural environment. Students are encouraged to form ideas about how we can live in harmony with nature. Targets: Students investigate how humans and animals adapt to live in different climates Students revisit how animals and plants form ecosystems which rely on their climate Students learn that nature can teach us how to live sustainably Students appreciate that the Earth is better off if we respect nature, and that we can work together to protect nature

Young people understand the climate problem. Let’s teach them the solutions Chapter 4: Units and Smart Tech This chapter focuses on energy that we use in our day-to-day lives and how we keep track of this. The class will be introduced to scientific units and discover how these are useful to us. Students will calculate how much power is used in real-world activities. They will also think about what it means for appliances to be efficient and inefficient. Finally, students will investigate how technology can help us to use energy in smart ways. Targets: Students encounter scientific units and how important they are to describe things in a simple and common way Students use units to calculate how much power we use in our homes and at school Students practice being efficient and inefficient Students find out how technology can help us save energy and money
