A fun, easy craft activity for celebrating Diwali (The Festival of Lights). Follow the instructions to make a diya out of salt dough and leave it to air dry for a few days. Decorate before drying (like the images provided), or dry and then paint/decorate. MAKING THE DIYA: Resources to assist with making the diya include: ♦ Teacher notes (with lots of ideas and hints). ♦ Recipe for your students to follow (makes 1 diya). ♦ Sequencing Cards – use as a recipe or as a sequencing task before making. These include pictures and text. WRITING TASKS: Two writing tasks are included as a follow-up to the craft activity. ♦ procedural / instructional writing (3 different templates). ♦ newspaper report writing (2 different templates plus an example). One of the newspaper reports is a fill-in-the-blanks template which is suitable for junior students. The instructions state to air dry the diya (takes a few days) but you could choose to dry it in the oven to speed up the process (details included in the teacher notes). WHAT YOU NEED: Flour, salt and water. Things to decorate it with (buttons, beads, shells, glitter, paint, etc). Answers are on the back of the card (great for self-marking) Each card has the same level of difficulty. Every second question is in bold font. All questions/answers are numbered 1-20. This is an activity that reinforces the recognition of high frequency sight words. Display a selection of the flies (on a board, on the floor, hanging, etc). Say a word. Your student(s) must find the fly with that word written on it, and swat it with a fly swatter. So much fun! You will need to provide the fly swat. Included: ♦ 315 coloured flies ♦ 315 black/white flies ♦ Blank templates (coloured and black/white) 315 Words: ♦ 220 Dolch words in frequency order ♦ 95 Dolch nouns in alphabetical order A solid background colour is used on the 220 words (9 different colours). ‘Clip and Flip’ cards for 11 Māori colours. A fun, hands-on activity for reinforcing the knowledge and recall of the names of colours. Instructions: Look at the colour splodge on the front of the card. Read the words on the right. Decide which one of the Māori words is the correct one for that colour and place a clothes peg on that word. Flip the card over to see if you are correct. Take the peg off and try again with another card. Note: The cards do not come with the answer on the back so you will need to place a mark on the reverse side of the card. Just use something like a sticker or make a mark with a coloured pencil. Do this before you laminate the cards. Included: ♦ Cards for 11 colours ♦ Cards for 11 colours without any text (add your own).
