In the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts on page 33, students are expected to build knowledge systematically by using nonfiction text in the areas of history/ social studies and science in a variety of areas. One of these areas in grades 4 and 5 is to read informational/ expository text within the subject matter of the Respiratory System. This report is also designed to not only learn and explain the new information, but answer some “Essential Questions” (higher level thinking questions) to further assess the students’ grasp of the information. The Effects of Exercise on the Cardiovascular System can be used during any unit on the heart or Cardiovascular System.
