Prepare yourself for teacher training - from anywhere in the world!

A Subject Knowledge Enhancement course (SKE), is a pre-initial teacher training programme that provides you with the skills to fill gaps in your knowledge and get a head start before your teacher training. With online resources that can be accessed at any time, from anywhere in the world, a Tes Institute SKE course is ideal for those looking to balance their training with their current professional and personal commitments. Harry Straughan is a key example of someone who made the most of the flexibility that SKE courses offer - managing to complete his Physics SKE while finishing his time in the Royal Navy!

In the final year of his 30-year Royal Navy career, Harry wanted to try something "different, challenging and worthwhile", and for him the course gave the flexibility to complete his service in the Royal Navy and easily make the transition from one career to another.

For Harry, some of the key benefits of the SKE course were:

Dedicated pathway tutor support

From the start of the course trainees are assigned a dedicated pathway tutor that is able to give personalised support and help trainees to master their chosen subject before their teaching training course. Working with the pathway tutor you will agree on a learning plan and calendar, to help you keep your goals in mind.

Interactive resources

Trainees have access to interactive resources that include: videos, pre-recorded lectures, readings and self-assessment exercises. These materials can be reviewed on-demand, helping you to revise and reinforce topics that you are not fully comfortable with. For Harry "the quality of the online learning is excellent – it is very flexible in terms of time and place and it is very interactive".

Peer to peer learning

The functionality of Tes Institute’s online platform means that you are in contact with a community of other teachers, with access to message boards that can help you to learn and engage with other teachers and trainees from around the world, giving you the feeling of being in a classroom.

Harry has now completed his teacher training and entered his first teaching job - something which his Subject Knowledge Enhancement helped him to move seamlessly into.

SKE courses are available in ten subjects, including Biolgy, Chemistry, Computing, English, French, German, Geography, Maths, Physics and Spanish. Find out more about SKE courses here.
