Tes Institute rated GOOD in latest Ofsted inspection

As schools broke up for summer, Tes Institute was given the perfect send off by receiving a ‘Good’ rating in its latest Ofsted inspection in both its primary and secondary phases covering key areas such as behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management.

In the newly published Ofsted report, inspectors considered the quality of education provision with a focus on the learner’s experience across different ITT routes, to understand what it’s like to study with Tes Institute. The report found that, trainees became ‘confident, reflective teachers’ who benefit from personalised advice from experienced mentors and pathway tutors, who are, as trainees say, ‘only a text message away’.

In a learner survey, one of our School Direct (now Initial Teacher Training) graduates who recently completed the programme with Havering Train to Teach Partnership shared her positive experience saying:

"The support I have been given this year through my main placement school and my pathway tutor has been amazing. The right level of support has been given at the right time and it has always felt like a very positive process. The online work has been sequenced very well and builds on prior work completed for the course. Assignments are really practical and linked closely to my development, I was able to apply what I learnt during my assignments to other parts of my practice."

The report further highlighted that trainees were ‘well prepared to teach relevant subjects’, and that ‘promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development is at the heart of the programme’, with the inspectors also noting that ‘trainees know what it means to be a teacher right from the start’.

"We are delighted that the high-quality of our ITT programmes has been recognised by Ofsted. Congratulations and thank you to our school partnerships, who are an integral part of our provision and have collaboratively designed and delivered our programme with us. We are proud of our programmes, our schools and our trainees and above all, that together, we have trained reflective, well-prepared professionals to teach in our partnership schools. We are particularly pleased that Ofsted recognised the high quality of our ambitious curriculum, and the support we provide for our trainees.  We look forward to continuing to train the next generation of teachers!"
Jane Coleman, Programme Director for Initial Teacher Training and Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship

“At Tes Institute we are extremely pleased with the recent Ofsted report confirming the Assessment Only route meets the DfE statutory compliance criteria. The feedback received truly represents the rigour and high-quality outcomes for candidates successfully awarded qualified teacher status. The judgement also reflects the hard work and determination of the Tes Institute team in working with schools in the retention of amazing staff who clearly meet the Assessment Only criteria. These are very exciting times as we all work together to continue to grow and strengthen the teaching profession domestically and internationally.”
Laura Marshall, Programme Director for SKE and Straight to Teaching

A commitment to quality education

The latest Ofsted report demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving our teacher training provision, and highlights the hard work carried out by our dedicated programme directors, mentors, pathway tutors and enthusiastic trainees.

Our Ofsted report follows a series of ITT reviews carried out by the DfE, which this year found 46% of new ITT inspection judgements are less than ‘good’.  It highlights the positive work we do in developing and inspiring trainee teachers, and is the latest review carried out by the department since we received a ‘Requires improvement’ rating at our last inspection in July 2021.

“We are delighted with our recent Ofsted report, it reflects the hard work and ambition of the whole Tes Institute team. Over the past year we have developed and built our apprenticeship routes, to enable schools to use their levy funds to train new and existing teaching assistants and aspiring teachers. Ofsted were keen to acknowledge that our apprentices and School Direct (now Initial Teacher Training) trainees feel 'supported and nurtured' as they develop their skills, knowledge and practice. We look forward to a very positive year ahead, growing our programmes both domestically and internationally and supporting our schools to both recruit and retain their fantastic staff.”
Emma Cook, Programme Director for Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

The leadership team at Tes Institute, with the ongoing support of the programme directors, are looking forward to continuing to build upon the strong foundations that have ensured our consistent improvement over the past 12 months.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of our Ofsted inspection and delighted that the inspectors have acknowledged how strong our courses are. This means that we can look forward positively to doing what we do best, preparing trainees to be the best teachers that they can be.”  Ian Hunter, Global Director at Tes Institute

This summer we also successfully gained re-accreditation for our ITT programmes from September 2024 and beyond, which you can read about here
