Job overview

To have overall responsibility for maintaining St Peter’s rowing and training equipment to a high standard and to arrange for it to be re-located as required. Will provide continuity for the care of equipment and will maintain a high profile when pupils are at the boathouse. Will work closely with the Head of Rowing and will assist in the coaching and development of St Peter’s rowing.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), 34 weeks of the year plus 4 weeks within holidays. It will include all term time Saturdays and school holiday work supporting regattas and trials.

Rowing Equipment, Boathouse and environs:

·          General repairs of the rowing boats, oars and ergometers (including servicing).

·          Keeping track of spare parts stock and liaising with the Head of Rowing and coaches to determine requirements.

· Liaising with external manufacturers and repairers to arrange major repairs or refurbishment where needed including the transport to and from the facilities.

· Liaising with all school staff to keep boathouses and landing stages clean and ensuring that the boathouse is kept secure.

·          Keeping the boathouse and storage tidy and ordered. Ensuring that the boat racking is maintained.

·  Liaising with other maintenance staff at the school to assist with boats and boathouse upkeep where required.

·  Assisting the Head of Rowing in liaising with Guy Fawkes Boat Club over their use of boats and facilities.

Launches:

·  Ensure the maintenance of the coaching launches, their trailers and the “launching ramp” and its trailer.

·          Ensure basic maintenance of the launch engines and to arrange annual servicing of engines.

·  Liaising with estates to ensure fuel tanks for launches kept full.

Vehicles and Trailer:

·  To liaise with Estates to ensure regular checks and simple maintenance of the Boat Club towing vehicle and trailers are carried out, ensuring that they conform to UK/EU legal regulations at any time.

Safety:

· To assist the Head of Rowing in the annual BR safety audit. To keep safety equipment in order, including (but not exclusively) launch safety bags (as suggested by British Rowing RowSafe), lifejackets (including servicing and replacement), throw bags, medical kits and the Defibrillator.

· Taking responsibility with the Head of Rowing for ensuring staff compliance with safety policy and practice in the boathouse and on the water wherever possible.

Races and Camps:

·   Assist with towing to races and training camps as required by Head of Rowing (this may include some overnight stays). A minibus licence and experience of towing would be an advantage, but training for both will be provided if required.

·   Assisting at races with boat repairs and loading/unloading of trailer.

·   To represent St. Peter’s as a member of staff. All disciplinary matters, unless minor, must be brought to the attention of the Head of Rowing before action is taken.

Administration:

· Depending on experience and by agreement with the Head of Rowing, to assist with administration such as, but not limited to: event entries, liaising with catering staff, organising buses and hotel bookings for events, liaison with Maintenance department.

·          Such other tasks as the Head of Rowing may reasonably require

Coaching:

·          To coach effectively within the coaching team. To coach within the aims, objectives and methodology of St Peter’s York Boat Club. If required to lead a specific rowing squad/year group with effective planning and application of correct rowing/sculling technique. To help with the running of some before and/or after school training sessions.

·          Depending on experience (and training) and in conjunction with the Head of Rowing, if required, organise and run Land training sessions (including Gym, weights and ergometers) safely and effectively.

·          To undertake additional training if required.

·          To support and attend competitions.

·          To assist with the organisation and coaching of sessions in half terms and holidays.

·          To undertake other tasks or training, commensurate with the grade of the post, as required. This is an important aspect because it is difficult to detail all the requirements of the role. The Head of Rowing will decide whether a particular task falls within what would reasonably be expected.

·          To help to create a positive and welcoming atmosphere at the Boat Club, assisting in promoting Rowing as a sport.

·          To be familiar with and to operate within the guidance of British Rowing’s RowSafe and Anti-Doping Policy.
