Job overview

Teacher of Science

Minimum of 0.6 Permanent – MPS/UPS

Start date: January 2025

We are a team of specialist biology, chemistry, and physics teachers with approximately 150 years of combined experience in the department. Our team includes teachers at all stages of their careers, and we are eager to welcome new members. We are looking for a knowledgeable and reflective practitioner to teach Science at KS3, with the opportunity to teach your specialism at KS4 and potentially KS5.

At Heart of England, we understand that our students can only thrive if our teachers thrive. A tired teacher burdened with unnecessary or unproductive bureaucratic tasks is unlikely to be their best. Therefore, we are working to create a blueprint for making the job manageable and enjoyable, driven by a culture of trust and underpinned by individual integrity. In our end-of-year department survey, the top reasons staff gave for staying in the Heart of England Science Department were our colleagues, the department itself, and the manageable workload. We welcome visits and are happy to discuss any questions you may have.

We believe in agency and autonomy for our staff. The same intellectual curiosity that led you to study your subject at university and to teach it to others is what makes you best placed to decide how to teach it now. We believe that when it comes to learning and teaching, our motto, "No One Way … By Design," does not imply limitless variety. Instead, our focus is on evidence-based teaching and selecting the best method at the right time. While we all bring variety to our roles, excellent outcomes are forged through the consistent application of proven methods.

The department is currently working to ensure that our assessment policy is low-workload but high-impact, benefiting both staff and pupils. We have also continued to refine our behaviour policy with the motto "Our Way…By Design," emphasising that shared values, defined habits, consistent routines, and clear boundaries are the foundation of a successful school. We are not interested in quick fixes or superficial tweaks; we are committed to sustainable excellence. Our vision outlines an ongoing process of continuous improvement and an adaptive, relentless drive for the implementation of best practices grounded in educational research.

“Students make outstanding progress in the sixth form, reaching standards which are well above the national average in most subjects. There is a rising trend in the percentage of students, including the more-able, gaining the highest grades in both A- and AS-level subjects.
