Read John Whitworth’s poem “The Cheer-up Song” on the poster.

Try to write a boasting poem to celebrate yourself. Make a list of things that you are good at. These could be ordinary things such as handwriting or bicycling. Then choose some things that are a little unusual - like chewing gum or dodging the cracks on the pavement.

Use these ideas to begin your poem, for example:

I’m the best at handwriting in our class.

I’m the best at bicycling

I’m the best at chewing gum

I’m the best at dodging the cracks on the street.

Take each idea and exaggerate, using the word “because” to help, for example:

I’m best at handwriting

In our class because my writing

Is neater than computer print.

I’m the best at bicycling because

I can cycle to Edinburgh -

and back - in half an hour,

without even puffing.

I’m the best at chewing gum,

Because I can blow bubbles

Larger than the Millennium Dome.

I’m the best at dodging

The cracks on the street

Because I can leap over

The Post Office Tower.
