I’m a chick lit fan. I like my fiction very romantic with unrealistic expectations, and Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married by Marian Keyes fits the bill: it has the required happy ending and it’s very funny.

Best film ever

I like people films, ones where you can really get inside the characters. I hate horror; I’m a bit of a wimp in that respect. The Shawshank Redemption (Frank Darabont, 1994) has great characters, a bit of a twist; but it also has the crucial happy ending.

Best inspiration

We’ve had some wonderful storytellers at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. Neil Griffiths, the former primary headteacher who invented Storysacks (bags containing books plus toys and puppets to bring the books alive), was so generous and encouraging with his advice. Liz Weir from Belfast gave us a wealth of tips, showing how you can adapt stories from the top of your head for different occasions.

The British Museum Ancient Egypt site is so interactive and brings the collection to life (www.ancientegypt.co.uk). I also use the children’s section of Show Me, the 24-hour museum (www.show.me.uk).

To share with children

The Little Angel Theatre, Islington, a tiny puppet theatre where I saw a production of Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox. They make all the puppets there.

It’s like going around Geppetto’s workshop in Pinocchio and it’s a must for a school trip. I’m hoping to see Quentin Blake’s Angelo, which is being performed there for Christmas.

Looking forward to

Going back to live and work in Manchester. I’m looking forward to the social life and the live music. And taking children to the great museums and galleries.
