With ruled (or square) pages and colourful front covers, the school exercise book is an age-old necessity of education. But there is one aspect of the classic exercise book that can still stump the best of us…
On Saturday night, writer, journalist and DJ Danny Baker asked Twitter users: “Why do people draw margins in their exercise books?”
The question confused many, had others laughing and gave a voice to a whole host of teachers who were praising the typically underappreciated workbook tactic. Because nothing quite says feedback like drawing in margins so that teachers can squeeze in comments, student praise and smiley stickers.
