I suspect that, in theory and in the silence of their own thoughts, most teachers do support the idea of their pay being linked to performance. But only in theory (“Performance pay `makes sense’ to most teachers”, 4 October). They recognise that, in practice, performance can only be judged, not objectively measured. And they are not confident that those judging them will share their views about what constitutes “good” performance. Teachers are right to support performance pay in theory; equally they are right to be wary of it in practice.
