Claire Fox has exaggerated the impartiality of exams. The most that can be said of them is that they are the least partial of assessment methods. But they are still “partial” - both in terms of the range of understanding they can assess in a time-limited period and of the inevitable judgements that have to be made by markers. “Objective, impartial measures” are a chimera.
