Far more girls than boys want to go on to higher education, a MORI poll of more than 2,500 11 to 16-year-olds for the Sutton Trust shows, writes Biddy Passmore.
Aspirations were higher among pupils from two-parent households and ethnic-minority teenagers: 41 per cent of the latter were “very likely” to go to university, compared with 34 per cent of white teenagers.
More state school pupils wanted to enter higher education than is commonly supposed. More than a third (35 per cent) said they were very likely to do so, with another third fairly likely. Only 11 per cent had ruled it out, with 17 per cent unsure.
