UNITED STATES: An American high school has become the first to make Palm Pilots compulsory for all students in what could signal the end for heavy, expensive laptops in schools.

Several hundred pupils at Forsyth Country Day School, Lewisville, North Carolina, will be given one of the handheld computers when they return next month.

The school plans to use Palms for grading and test assessment. Students will also be able to email and surf the Web on them, while e-Textbooks and course materials will be distributed on small digital cards that slot into the m500 model.
