Name: Peter Walker Position: Senior teacher in charge of curriculum, Formby high school, Liverpool

Q If you had David Blunkett’s budget what would your priority be?

A Recruiting high-quality graduates. They need financial inducements to encourage them into education. In some subject areas, such as modern languages, we have great difficulty recruiting.

Q If you had a blank cheque for your own school what would you buy?

A The buildings need restoring to the standard they were 30 years ago. The old pre-war high school with its poper tiled roofs is fine. But the flat roofs on the buildings constructed when we became a comprehensive have caused enormous problems. Our heating system, an old coal-fired boiler, sometimes doesn’t heat up until 11am. This is particularly bad when you have kids taking exams in overcoats.

Q What treat would you buy yourself?

A Enhanced early retirement to play golf on the Costa del Sol.

Peter Walker was talking to Stephanie Northen. If you’d like to publish a shopping list for education, please e-mail friday@tes.co.uk.
