Sport gives Medwyn Roberts a chance to enjoy life outside school

How do you keep fit?

In the winter it’s five-a-side football, in the summer it’s cricket, and I try to play golf all year round. I also do all the PE lessons and sports clubs at school.

What got you started?

My dad got me on the golf course, and by 16 I was playing for the county. I played cricket and football at school and have just tried to keep going. I play for local teams, but not as regularly as I would like.

Why those sports?

I enjoy the combination of team sports and competing by myself. And I like to get outside after a day in the classroom.

How do you make time?

I fit things in when I can. I run sports clubs at school three nights a week so I don’t have time to do as much as I would like. But I do something every weekend. One of the advantages of team sports is that you have to turn up or you let people down.

Have you felt the benefits?

It gives me something other than school. I feel I’m getting some enjoyment out of life.

Any downsides?

Sports like golf and cricket take a lot of time, and are quite technical; they need commitment and practice. Since I’ve been teaching I’ve let them slip because I just can’t put in the hours.

How active are your colleagues?

They’re all in their 40s and 50s, but I think some of my enthusiasm is rubbing off. They’ve just bought bikes and are practising for a sponsored cycle ride round Anglesey.

Healthy hint?

Simple things go a long way. Just a walk in the garden or in the streets is a good start.
