SCOTLAND’S NATIONAL collections have come together to produce education materials for the 300th anniversary of the union of the parliaments of Scotland and England.

A Union for a’ that is a collaborative education project for Scottish schools, funded by the Scottish Executive. The Royal Commis-sion on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and Historic Scotland, together with the National Galleries, the National Library, the Scottish Parliament and the Law Society, are pooling their knowledge to produce a series of workshops for primary and secondary schools.

Material will then be adapted and made into a DVD and booklet, in partnership with Learning and Teaching Scotland. These will be distributed free to every primary and secondary in Scotland, in October. The booklet and DVD will explore various aspects of the union, designed to support A Curriculum for Excellence, and each of the project partners is contributing some of the content.

The DVD will have different strands of content, for teachers, primaries and secondaries. Features will include film clips of debates from the final of the Donald Dewar memorial debating tournament for secondary schools in June, which is run by the Law Society of Scotland, plus a section on how to teach debating skills.

The materials will include timelines, digital images of portraits of key figures involved in the union from the National Galleries, and digital images of historical documents relating to the act of union and the correspondence of politicians and key political figures of the time, from the NAS.

The Royal Commission will contribute architectural drawings and photographs of local and national government buildings in Scotland, historical and current, with information about what changed and what stayed the same after the union.

Various areas of the curriculum will be addressed - citizenship, history, government and democracy, modern studies, politics, drama, role play and other areas.
