Toni Fazaeli says that thousands have given their views to the Institute for Learning (“With the IfL, FE can rebuild ailing economy”, 19 August). Views about the IfL have been made perfectly clear by members of the University and College Union (UCU), who voted overwhelmingly to boycott the organisation in a row over membership fees.

UCU members rejected plans that would have left them with a pound;38 annual bill for membership of the IfL because they do not see its value or believe the organisation fit for purpose. Members believe the IfL does little, if anything, to support their professional development and that, for the majority, any charge would be too much.

Given that the General Teaching Council for England, a similar body for teachers, is being axed by the Government, members do not understand why membership of the IfL remains compulsory.
