Focuses on the main themes which they mind map and identify key points of the novel and characters that are involved. There is also a gap fill activity (also available to download on its own) which tests their recall of key quotes from stave 1. This is designed to prompt plenty of discussion as well as testing their memory before building up to exam style responses nearer the exam.

Lesson I created for my mid/lower ability Y8 group. Following Tommo's revelation of his father's death and him feeling at fault students reflect on whether he is truly to blame. They then write persuasive speeches as though they are defence or prosecution barristers at a trial. There are some sentence starters and scaffolds in place. They can then read them out at the end as a bit of a competition.
