Malala persuasive writing speech

(0)
This resource contains a persuasive speech by Malala highlighting the inequality in education received by girls and boys in Pakistan and how she spoke up against the Taliban. This is suitable for Year 10 students who need to learn/refresh their persuasive writing skills. It was developed in preparation for the iGCSE English language exam, however, would be suitable for any other exams requiring students to write persuasively. The first page contains an abridged version of the speech where students can identify a number of persuasive techniques (video link also included). This highlights the fact that these techniques are actually used in real life, not just in exams. The next page contains a series of questions based on the scenario that your class will not be able to sit their exams due to a global pandemic and asking them to explore their feelings towards this. This can be related to COVID and also to the daily reality in Pakistan for girls that Malala spoke about. The final task asks students to write their own persuasive speech to their head teacher to fight this injustice. This whole pack could be delivered over 2-3 lessons.

Local area creative writing

This resource contains a step by step planning process to writing a story using an area local to your students. This is suitable for Year 8-10 students who need to learn/refresh their creative writing skills. It was developed in preparation for the iGCSE English language exam, however, would be suitable for any other exams requiring students to write creatively. The first 2 pages contain instructions on how to develop your setting and provides two different local areas (Google Maps) as a visual aid. The use of local settings allows the students to use facts from the sites to help them in their descriptions, rather than having to create a setting from scratch. The next page contains prompts to help them construct their character, the atmosphere and the plot. These can be used as absolutes or as a springboard for other ideas which might spark in your student’s mind. The final page provides a planning scaffold, which you can opt out of if you feel your students don’t need it, before asking them to use all these elements to write their story. This whole pack could be delivered over 3-4 lessons.
