Quick mark Mathematics GCSE questions

(61)
On every GCSE Maths paper there are some questions that are what I call, "Quick mark questions." That is, ones you can do in less than a minute if you know the Maths.

I put this booklet together to help students practice them. It is aimed at those taking the Higher paper although Foundation students may well still find quite a bit of it useful for revision.

I would love to hear your feedback @MrsHsNumeracy

GCSE Maths Foundation Revision Sheets

(57)

I produced these sheets for some final revision for my Foundation group. They have a range of targets from 1 to 4 so I wanted a mixture of stuff for them - a bit of recall, a bit of applying and a bit of “thinking” questions - the phrase “problem solving” can be a bit off putting for some of them. Let me know what you think.

I designed this worksheet to help my students make links within the topic of equations of linear functions. It includes finding the gradient/y-intercept, writing the equations of lines, plotting functions from an equation, determining whether a point is on a line, finding parallel lines and then rearranging equations to determine their gradient and y-intercept. It would be suitable for KS3 or KS4.

Revision Quiz Cards for Higher / Foundation GCSE Maths

Looking for a way to liven up revision? I have found these work really well if students need a break from working their way through questions. Simply print them off (I do them on card so I can re-use them), cut them up and then get students to test each other in pairs. Students place any questions they can't answer in a pile and then I give them follow up revision questions on those specific topics.

Thanks to Mark Greenaway (@suffolkmaths) for editing them to make a set suitable for Foundation students.

I'd love to hear what you think - contact me on Twitter @MrsHsNumeracy

GCSE Further Maths Revision Clocks

(16)
My Y11 Further Maths students were getting frustrated at the lack of interesting revision resources I could find for them online - so I started to make my own.

Here are a couple of revision clocks (thanks @mathsjem for sharing the idea). When students complete a question they can shade in that sector of the clock - the idea being to complete a question at least every 5 minutes.

My students have loved doing these - makes a nice change from endless past papers. Please let me know what you think @MrsHsNumeracy

Having seen a few people put these together via Twitter, I decided to make one for my top set GCSE Maths students.

12 questions to do in 1 hour - they get to colour in a sector of the clock as they complete each one (and have it checked). It created a really good atmosphere in the class, and a little bit of competition.

All the questions are off specimen/actual papers.

Additional Maths FSMQ Revision Booklet

Additional Maths is, in my experience, quite a tough challenge for the majority of Y11s. I was really struggling to find resources to support my students with their revision and so I created this booklet linking the specification/content to specific examples off exam papers. (I had seen something similar for Further Maths). I've left it as a Word document so it is easy to add in extra questions if you'd like to. If you do adapt it I would be grateful if you could credit me.

Bit of a niche market but if you are one of the schools that offer this qualification I would love to share ideas @MrsHsNumeracy

KS3/GCSE Foundation revision Maths Trail

(6)
I designed this Maths trail as part of a drive by myself and @MissWillisMaths to finally get some progress out of a couple of lower ability Year 9 classes we had.

It was designed to cover Levels 4 to 6 but I have renamed Level 4 - Level A, Level 5 - Level B and Level 6 - Level C so it could just as easily be used for any year.

Simply put the Maths trail posters round the room. Students start on the Level which they have been given by their teacher. They can start at any card. They then answer the problem for their level and, having done this, search for the answer at the top of another card.

It is important that they record their answers in order as they move round the room (ideally on the answer sheet provided).

If they have done it correctly they should manage a full circuit using all the questions.

Feedback would be very welcome @MrsHsNumeracy

Mathematical Literacy Assessment

(5)
After spending some time wondering why certain students achieved well in class but failed to make any progress in assessments, I started doing a lot of work developing vocabulary in my Mathematics lessons and across my department.

I designed this Mathematical literacy assessment to see what words the students could and couldn't understand.

Although I initially used it as a sort of test - and did a question by question analysis - feedback has been that it works well as a group activity, where students work together to try and put the words in the correct places.

I have developed a series of resources to look at this. They can also be found on my website www.mrshowardsnumeracynetwork.com

Follow me on Twitter to get updates @MrsHsNumeracy

I would love to hear your feedback.

Key Stage 3 Maths Revision - Kagan Showdown

(5)
Following recent Kagan training at school, I decided to take the leap and try out some strategies with my Key Stage 3 classes.

This is my first set of "showdown" cards, based around some key topics our Key Stage 3 students should know. You could easily adapt them to produce additional cards.

Students work in 4s and take it in turns to ask each other a question. The other 3 students write down their answers (in secret) on mini-whiteboards. The person asking the question then shouts "showdown" and the students reveal their answers.

The question cards have worked solutions on which allows the student asking the question to congratulate or coach the other students as necessary when they see their answers.

I'd love to hear your feedback @MrsHsNumeracy

I have been fortunate enough to work with Allison Cowan (@MrsCLiteracy) recently on developing literacy across the curriculum.

Based on her idea, I developed this series of posters to help students understand how key verbs used in Mathematics assessments should be interpreted and also how they are used in examinations in other subjects.

I have a series of resources on developing Mathematical literacy which can also be found on my website www.mrshowardsnumeracynetwork.com

Follow me on Twitter for updates @MrsHsNumeracy

I would love to hear your feedback.

GCSE Maths Revision Starter - Number Bash

I was just looking for a 15 minute starter for my GCSE class - something to get their brains warmed up which would give me a chance to recap on some basics.

I came up with this: A series of 30 questions, split into 3 sets of 10. Each set of 10 to be done in, at the most, 5 minutes. They recap on the topics I wanted to reinforce with my group - but you could easily edit it to make it suitable to yours.

Answers included.

I'd love to hear your feedback @MrsHsNumeracy

Wordsearches and Anagrams to develop Mathematical Vocabulary

(4)
We all know that if students can't understand the question, they won't make the progress in assessments that they are capable of.

As part of my drive to improve our students understanding of Mathematical Vocabulary, I created this series of anagrams and wordsearches to be used in form time with tutors.

They are part of a series of resources I have developed which I will be sharing on TES. They can also be found on my website www.mrshowardsnumeracynetwork.com

Follow me on Twitter to get updates of when other resources go live @MrsHsNumeracy

I would love to hear your feedback.

Developing Mathematical Vocabulary

(3)
Knowing key vocabulary has a direct impact on a student's ability to access assessments and hence on their progress. Sounds obvious but I know myself as a Maths teacher I have often failed to spend the time I need to developing my students' Mathematical language.

This PowerPoint was the first in a series of activities I developed to be used in form time to develop Mathematical vocabulary.

The resources can also be found on my website www.mrshowardsnumeracynetwork.com

Follow me on Twitter to get updates @MrsHsNumeracy

I would love to hear your feedback.
