For A - Level component 03 of OCR’s syllabus but is suitable for all exam boards. This resource is a chapter by chapter summary with analysis. I compared this with R.C. Sherrfiff’s “Journey’s End”.

The page numbers refer to the Faber and Faber edition - see front cover for the specific copy.

This is a complete resource that explores the many contexts of the novella. It has space for answers and is aimed at a middle ability group but can be easily adapted.

Updated and reduced on 31st December 2021. Just to clarify in response to the review - the booklet is a set of tasks on context. There are no answers. Happy New Year, everyone.

This is a research activity aimed at low ability key stage 3. The aim is to research World War One poets and produce a fact file but there are other activities too. This is intended as a bridging activity to take us up to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and to create a display of the fact files. It would be handy to book into a computer room as there are recommended websites for their research included too. A final homework activity is for the students to research their own families and bring in photographs - they could even do their own presentations. The whole resource is easily adaptable.

Aimed at year 9 this fully resourced lesson builds on persuasive techniques in speeches. The students will watch a five minute video and analyse the techniques. They will then write their own speech. There is a fun starter and a Trump tweet to finish!

A fun and engaging introduction to the play. It is deliberately uncluttered to allow discussion. There is a fun slide on Denmark, some political points, a list of actors and actresses and a gender question at the end. Suitable for all key stages.

Perfect for year 10 or 11 on completion of the novel study. An ideal plan to put on A3 with an extract from chapter 1, vocabulary and full annotation. There are guidance questions too as a starting point. Can be differentiated to suit higher but is aimed at mid to lower ability pupils.

This double-sided worksheet has poetic analysis with the poem on page one then context and quote location tasks on the second page.

Ideal for low ability and an introduction to unseen poetry.
