Bubble writing - cursive handwriting scaffold

Like many primary school teachers I have tried a variety of handwriting schemes with varying degrees of success. Having thought through many common problems with handwriting I have developed a simple scaffold that places a bubble either side of the line to support letter formation. This simple scaffold provides a guide to consistently form cursive letters and ensure each letter is uniform in both height and width. Children are able to leave equal spaces between words and see clearly whether or not there is enough space at the end of each line for the next word they intend to write. There has been a huge impact within my class in a very short space of time and I hope you will see similar benefits within your own setting.

Included is a PowerPoint presentation including words from the Year 1/2 spelling list that can be printed as a handwriting pack for children to work through. Blank slides enable you to add words to suit your needs and finally 2 different sized PDF scaffolds that children can use to write on (If photocopied the bubbles will disappear to leave the writing that has been completed.)

The 2nd document removes the guide lines, but still provides the ‘dots’ for the children.

The 3rd document removes the dots and provides the student with a series of guidelines. The upper line contains a Y5/6 spelling in a cursive style as a guide for the student. The lower line is where the student should try to replicate the above example.

This is a step by step guide for an adult delivering a handwriting intervention to pupils in KS2. If you use a different font at your school then you can easily edit this on the word versions of each document, by highlighting the words and selecting your own school's font on your computer. This resource is aimed at pupils in KS2 who are not forming letters correctly and/or who are not joining letters correctly. This resource should be seen as a revision of existing knowledge and is not intended to be used at KS1.
The resource has four pages:
1. Instructions
2. Progression through a set of individual words
3. Progression through writing whole sentences
4. A sheet for the adult to record the child's initial errors, dates and duration of sessions as well as the impact of the intervention.
