Flight Times and Time Zones Challenge

(2)
A fantastic Maths Challenge! ANSWERS provided! Learning Intention: To investigate time zones and to calculate flight times. Activity: Students have to calculate the arrival time (UK and local time at destination) for each flight. For the highest achieving students, they have to use the 2 websites provided to calculate flight times and time zone differences as well as generating their own flights! Almost every parent commented on how exciting and challenging this homework challenge was and the students loved it! PDF and Word formats available so fully editable. Please note: Depending on the time of year, the flight times on the activity sheets may vary by 1 HOUR. This is because of daylight saving times (when the UK clocks move forwards/backwards by 1 hour ). You don’t need to worry about this, just use the times written on the activity.

This is an introductory practical lesson to demonstrate how pupils measure time and teaches them the importance of accuracy. This resource pack contains: A PPT (14 slides) and handouts (2 sheets) . Included in this resource is two of our timers complete with MUSIC. Activities include: Starter Task: Thinking Skills question Activity on on recording time digitally. Pupils will find out when completing the challenges that they won’t be accurate. Therefore, they will want to repeat challenge reinforcing the need for repeat experiments to find averages. Experiment on measuring different times and two practical challenges. Plenary (Exit task) : Think, Pair Share- Please note… This Exit Task/Plenary is designed to draw out the findings of the measuring time activities. These being that the children will learn that using a stop click to seconds and hundredths of seconds will give them a precise time. However, this is not 100% accurate due to human error (reaction times). You should discuss how to improve on accuracy ( use of repeats and find an average). In our lessons, all key words are added to our KS3 Science - Scientific Vocabulary A-Z . We hope that you enjoy this resource! Converting 12 and 24 hour time

This resource works best with an interactive whiteboard that learners can write on. It can also be adapted for use on Seesaw or other online platforms. This resource begins with a time conversions starter quiz on units of time. It then begins by explaining the key differences between 12 and 24 hour time. It then provides digital clocks for learners to practise converting between the two different formats. It has ten practice questions for learners to try independently. Finally, it progress to using analogue and digital clocks and writing times in both 12 and 24 hour format. This challenges learners and provides good assessment of which areas of time learners find challenging. A template for these slides is available which can be printed for learners to write on directly either with pencil or work well with smart pals or wallets.

Speed Distance Time Activities

Designed for an Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 6 class but suitable for early KS3 Year 7 for revision, these 6 Speed, Distance and Time printable Four in a Row games (metric units) are fun alternative activities to additional textbook work on this maths topic, after pupils know the formulae D=SxT, S=D÷T and T=D÷S. ANSWER VERSIONS of all games are included. All games are in PDF format. Contains a more simple (one star) and more challenging (two star) version for each of: Distance Travelled Average Speed Time Taken In addition to featuring generally more challenging calculations, the two-star versions of each require conversion between units in some cases. Print and laminate the boards for regular use. I recommend printing boards in A3 if possible (or enlarging them to A3 on the copier) but A4 will be okay too. Pupils work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a die each time to find which column to pick a calculation from (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no calculations left in the column whose number they have rolled, they either skip a go or roll again (depending on the rules you have chosen). Pupils write their answers on the board with a whiteboard marker. They could either use a different coloured pen to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if using the same coloured pen as their opponent. I hope your students enjoy playing these games. What about this festive mental maths puzzle pack?
