This resource introduces learners to microsoft excel and what it is used for. It starts off with basics and shows cells, columns and rows and how these are identified and accessed. It engages learners with this through the use of games e.g. -cell art where they have to fill the cell with the correct colour and make the picture. -cell mine field which they play with a partner (like battleships) cell bingo (there is a linked spinning wheel with all cells ref) Finally it leads children up to a mini project where they plan and budget a dinner for their family. They can use the internet or magazines to get prices or simply make them up. They must record their costs, quantities etc on their spreadsheet. For more challenge, I introduced more confident learners with simple formulas to calculate their totals.

Reflective Writing - The Best/Worst Day of My Life

(0)
Reflective Writing - The Best/Worst Day of My Life As pupils progress in their writing, it is important to teach them how to progress their basic recount writing into reflective writing. Rather than just retell events pupils will describe their thoughts/emotions and reflect on how these events impacted them positively or negatively. Pupils really enjoyed this writing piece and I emphasised that it didn’t have to be a hugely emotional experience which could upset them. The pupils had recently visited a residential stay so I felt that this was a good one to model for them as many of them had different experiences of it. This resource takes you through what it means to be reflective. It also provides examples for the pupils which allows them to discuss if the paragraph recounts or reflects. There is also a modelled writing piece which breaks the writing into sections for the pupils.

Positive & Negative Integers Introduction Lesson

Positive & Negative Integers Introduction Lesson

(0)
This lesson provides an introduction to positive and negative integers. It begins by explaining what an integer is and discussing different examples of how we use negative integers in real life. It then has a few different examples and discussion points using real life examples which can be done as whole class, individuals or groups e.g. weather, money etc. The resource then goes on to describe positive integers as hot numbers and negative integers as cold numbers. I find this really helps learners when performing calculations involving integers. The resource also contains a simple tug of war game that can be printed and played in pairs or played on the board with volunteers. For the game, someone is positive and someone is negative, they roll a dice and they move that number of spaces on the number line. Negative player moves to the left and positive player to the right. The winner is the person who makes it to their end of the number line. This is just a very simple game that encourages the children to add positive or negative integers and helps them visualise it on a number line. The resource then goes through different examples of adding and subtraction integers. It has a visual number line to support learners. When explaining this to learners, I use the terminology of hot and cold numbers and use the example of a drink e.g. adding hot numbers will increase the temperature, adding cold numbers will decrease it or subtracting hot numbers will decrease the temperature and subtracting cold numbers will increase the temperature. Finally, there are 6 quick questions that learners can answer and this can be used as a means of formative assessment.
