Students are given two gas chromatograms. The first is a chromatogram with external standards and the concentration of all species has been determined. The second chromatogram has data missing and the students have to determine the area for one peak (graphically using the trapezoidal method or simple triangle), the peak height for one peak and the retention time for one peak. The concentration has to be determined for all using ratios from the first chromatogram.<br /> <br /> Answers are given.

Suggested Usage:<br /> <br /> Starter: Introduce the idea of Hazards, Risks and Controls. Maybe have a picture of a Lab Accident and identify the Hazards etc.<br /> Main: Use the Coloured Cards (Red=Hazards, Orange=Risks and Green=Controls), to get the pupils to assess some of the sample activities. <br /> Extension: Challenge the pupils to create their own scenarios and fill in a laminated blank proforma with a white board marker.<br /> Plenary: Discuss Risk Assessment with reference to the assessments the pupils have come up with.<br /> <br /> The blank proformas can be use at the beginning of every practical to assess it.

Each set has 1H/13C NMR spectras, IR Spectrum, Mass Spectrum and elemental analysis data.</p> <p>The excel spreadsheet contains the identification of each set, the elemental analysis calculations and the molecular formulae.</p> <p>28 individual sets allows you to set each student in a group their own molecule to identify allowing you to determine the ability of each students.
