Unseen Poetry

(1)

This resource is designed for KS3 and KS4 unseen poetry. The resource is designed to guide pupils on how to approach and analyse any poem by going through the 10 steps. On the back, there is guidance on how to write up an analysis using a variety of vocabulary. In addition there is a section on how to introduce a comparison to the poetry, again going in step by step. This has proved very useful for all abilities. This resource has been used frequently within my own department and has proven very successful. I would recommend using the resource towards the end of your scheme (after pupils are familiar with different techniques and forms) to promote independent learning. It is good practice for GCSE.

The Wife of Bath A-Level Edexcel

This pack includes:

a detailed summary and overview of the Wife’s character, her Prologue and Tale, and Chaucer’s purpose in using this character (context and intention).

A model response is provided that is an A* exemplar.

Commentaries on key sections on the text

Historical Context

Powerpoints on key symbols, themes and narrative techniques

This is designed for A Level learning, however it can certainly be used to introduce the students to middle english. By providing a detailed handout on plot and purpose prior to reading the middle english text, students will be more confident in what they are reading and will therefore be able to analyse the text more confidently.

Attached is a video that I gave my literature group to help them visualise the tale itself. Again this was used to set a solid foundation for comprehension to allow us to spend more time on analysis, and it proved very useful.

This pack has been used for both CCEA and Edexcel. Can be adapted to suit any exam board style essay.

A Level introduction exemplars

From my experience, Alevel students struggle to make the leap from GCSE style writing to what is required from Alevel, particularly for introductions. In order to combat this issue, I have compiled a collection of introductions that I used with my Alevel English Literature group. This allowed them to examine a successful writing style, whilst reflecting on their own work. It proved very successful in the lesson when used, and the consequentially has shown a drastic improvement to the pupils writing. I used this resource by initially taking away the essay title, and allowing them to decipher what the title would be based on the introduction alone. This forced them to evaluate the purpose of an introduction and therefore develop their own writing style accordingly. This resource, however, can be used as is and evaluation of the work can still produce successful outcomes. The essays used have been chosen to support those doing the Edexcel English Literature Alevel, but can be applied to any examination board.
