<p>This lesson will teach students about the Middle Passage which enslaved Africans had to endure before starting their lives in slavery in the Americas. It covers the trauma and difficulties millions of enslaved Africans had to experience whilst highlighting the brutal nature of the voyage. Other parts focus on helping students to articulate the level of detail they need to include when offering evidence to supprot a statement in history. It covers aspects of their culture such as the Akan drum and highlights how objects can be useful to learn about the past, encouraging the use of historical skills such as inference. The first involves the appearance of more slave castles with a focus on Elmina castle and its role in the slave trade. The second is considering how Europeans changed the relations between African societies in West Africa.
