AS Organic Chemistry Synthesis/Reaction Map Revision (Edexcel 2015)

(1)
This map includes a visual summary of all the organic reactions mentioned in Topic 6 of the Edexcel AS Chemistry specification.

It includes type of reaction and the reagents and conditions required. It also shows students which reactions they need to remember the mechanisms for and those reactions they have completed as part of their core practical work.

3 pdf files included:
Fully completed summary map
Partially completed summary map (without reagents and conditions)
Blank summary map (without reagents, conditions or reaction names)

I have always "built" this map as part of my teaching of organic chemistry to help pupils consolidate all the reactions they come across and review the chemistry of functional groups studied earlier. Once complete it then becomes a valuable revision resource.

Ready to print on A4 but I recommend scaling up to A3 for pupils to annotate.
I hope it's useful!

Electromagnetic Spectrum Circus of Activities

(1)
A circus activity that introduces students to some of the properties and uses of EM waves.

I laminate each page on the pdf and set up an activity station for each type of EM wave. Cycle students around each station every 5-10mins. They can complete the activity at each station and write down their observations. Extension questions included at each station.

Materials required:
Portable radio
Paper/plastic/aluminium foil
TV remote
Ray box + Prism
Sun cream and moisturiser in unidentifiable bottles, UV lamp, polythene wallet, driving licence?
X-ray images (see scoli1.jpg and scoli.jpg)

Organic Nomenclature Quiz Website

Sharing a link to a fantastic quiz generator that tests pupils understanding of IUPAC nomenclature - both through drawing and naming organic molecules and identifying functional groups.

You can customise the quiz to include only those functional groups that have been studied, or make it more challenging and include compounds with more than one functional group.

Works perfectly on an interactive whiteboard with internet access and makes an excellent starter/plenary team activity.

Created by Alison B. Skin Sensitivity Investigation Homunculus Mapper

Sharing a link to "The Homunculus Mapper" - a website that includes a full investigation using two point discrimination, to map the sensitivity of the skin at different parts of the body.

Students first need to make a simple "poker" using card and toothpicks. (template included on website). They can work in groups of three (a test subject, an experimenter and a data collector) to carry out the investigation. The really fun part is that students can then enter their results on the website to create their own homunculus.

My accompanying powerpoint and worksheet included.

Sharing a link to ChemAxon's Marvin JS applet - an easy to use, free, web-based tool for drawing organic compounds.

Works well on an interactive whiteboard and can be used as part of a homework activity (my own example included)

Features:
Ability to draw displayed and skeletal structures as well as ball and stick models (via settings)
Easy to add R groups, charges and radicals
Curly arrows available for constructing mechanisms

Link to user guide also included.
