With only 20 minutes to escape each life-threatening scenario, the characters must rely on their wits, courage, and quick thinking to survive. The only prep you need to do is printing or uploading to google classroom or a similar platform. This bundle of resources consists of: a 40-page comprehension guide. This guide focuses on a range of skills, such as literal and inferential understanding, text-to-self connections, author purpose, cause and effect and much much more. Each chapter also has an associated vocabulary booster, which requires students to use contextual clues to decode the meaning of new words, and then apply these in their own writing. There is an answer guide for the literal comprehension questions. a set of ten full-colour literacy centre task cards based on the text. These include a range of Creative and Practical Arts integrated tasks, as well as informative, imaginative and persuasive writing prompts. This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a reading group text for Stage Two or Stage Three students. This is a HUGE 30+ page resource designed to support teaching students about Noongar Country (Western Australia) in your Stage 2 or Stage 3 classroom. These two books are used as mentor texts for the Stage 3 Unit 7 unit “Imagery, Symbol and Connotation”, however this resource completely stands alone and does not need to be integrated with this, or any other, unit of work. The two meticulously crafted student workbooks are aimed for use by Stage Two and Stage Three students, and are also designed to complement elements of the History and Geography curriculum content for these stages . There is also a strong theme in these books of conservation and togetherness. These workbooks are your perfect teaching companion to teach students about the depth and richness of First Nations culture. Also included is a set of ten full-colour Literature Circle Task Cards. Activities are not only designed to be completely independent, but involve a high-degree of student choice to build engagement. Persuasive, informative and imaginative writing prompts are included, as well as integrated Creative Arts activities. All printables for literacy tasks are included, and many of these can be adapted for many other books, both fiction and non-fiction. Also included is a full-colour set of informative posters based on the six seasons of Noongar country. These seasons are a fundamental element of Noongar culture and can be used for a range of associated tasks and discussions. This is a HUGE, no-prep, 80-page unit of work based on the Dreaming story “The Rainbow Serpent”. I used the Dick Roughsey version of this text, however any version of this text could be adapted. This unit is based on the “A Book a Week” model, whereby students examine one book throughout the week, examining the text deeply to build a range of literacy skills on a more sustained and integrated level. Students explore the book “The Rainbow Serpent” through a range of structured reading, writing and speaking and listening tasks. Daily slides are provided with all prompts and student directions needed to teach all elements of the literacy block for the week. This book was taught as an integrated text to support the teaching of the history strand “Community and Remembrance” whereby students examine the importance of Country and Story to the Indigenous Peoples of Australia. All teaching notes for culturally appropriate content are included, as well as resources to support the teaching of the History unit. The unit was designed for a Stage Two classroom but could easily be modified for both a Stage One class (by simplifying the response tasks) or a Stage Three class (by extending the written component). Students will examine the story of The Rainbow Serpent and then plan, draft and publish a narrative of their own. The unit includes: A comprehensive step-by-step daily teaching guide, including real-world examples from my classroom. This contains all elements of the literacy block designed to support a full week of English teaching (speaking and listening, reading and writing) Australian Curriculum and NESA Links for Stage Two Daily Speaking and Listening Prompts A comprehension guide at different ability levels (general and advanced) which can be printed and used as an independent worksheet in reading groups or used to supplement questioning during shared reading lessons. HUGE Resource Bundle - The Little Refugee - Anh Do - Shared Reading - Workbook

This is a unit of work I created to complement an integrated Stage Three History unit of work on “Australia as a Nation”. This unit of work contains a component whereby students are required to explore the stories of people who migrated to Australia, including at least one Asian nation. I incorporated the text The Little Refugee to enable my students to understand and synthesise what they were learning in their History unit – about the dangers faced by refugees in coming to Australia, and the positive impact of diversity on the community. The book The Little Refugee by Anh and Suzanne Do tells the true story of Anh Do’s journey to Australia as a small boy, and his early years in his new country. It can be slightly confronting for students to see the difficulties and hardships faced by refuges in coming to Australia, so a background is provided in this slideshow. This unit contains: outcomes (History/HASS/English) a printable, no-prep student workbook with sections for comprehension, grammar, text-to-self connections, vocabulary, research and more a detailed background to the contact of the story - the Vietnam War, the Fall of Saigon, “boat people” and Vietnamese migration to Australia; and the influence of Vietnamese culture in Australia a step-by-step shared reading guide to the text, including discussion prompts. Prompts focus on literal and inferential comprehension as well as drawing upon visual literacy skills (with learning intentions) “before the book” and “after the book” tune-in questions after the book reflection question in-depth author study focussing on Anh Do as a comedian, writer and artist Literacy Centre task cards with two weeks of integrated English/Creative Arts independent activities The resource is provided in both PowerPoint and PDF formats.

Quin has always dreamed of becoming a great summoner like his ancestors, but when his first Calling goes horribly wrong, he discovers a shocking secret: the objects they summon aren’t created from thin air—they’re stolen from other realms. This book was selected to be a mentor text to teach the Stage Two NESA Unit (13): Characterisation. The resources are designed both to provoke deep thinking about the text, but also to be completely independent. The only prep you need to do is printing or uploading to google classroom or a similar platform. This bundle of resources consists of: a chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide. The guide focuses on a range of skills , such as literal and inferential understanding, text-to-self connections, author purpose, cause and effect and much much more. All up, this is 70+ pages of independent comprehension work. The comprehension guide comes in the form of a workbook which can be printed and stapled for independent work. a comprehensive answer guide, perfect for assessment and feedback. a set of ten full-colour literacy centre task cards based on the text. These include a range of Creative and Practical Arts integrated tasks, as well as informative, imaginative and persuasive writing prompts. a 44-page vocabulary booster, highlighting words from the text. Students are required to analyse the words in content, find dictionary definitions and use these words in sentences of their own. There are two pages of vocabulary tasks for every chapter. This is weeks of learning, covering reading, writing and speaking and listening. This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a reading group text for Stage Two or Three students. I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them Australian) so feel free to check them out. Happy reading!

This is a HUGE, 500+ page supporting slideshow for the new NESA Stage Two English Unit (13) which explicitly teaches the concept of characterisation using the mentor text, “The Callers” by Kiah Thomas. This resource is a supporting slideshow which means it is linked to the Department of Education (NSW) unit of work which teaches Stage 2 students about characterisation. This unit of work is available for free on the NESA site (it is also included in this resource). All the corresponding lessons are included in the slideshow, meaning this is a complete no-prep resource, when used in conjunction with the lesson guide. Slides are full-colour, engaging and fun, whilst also encapsulating all the key concepts of the unit, so you don’t need to cross-reference or produce these yourself. NOTE: This unit is presented in two formats. One is as a series of PDFs. The other is a non-editable PowerPoint slideshow. This is due to many requests from my lovely customers who have asked for slideshows to be in PPT format. This means you can pick slides, add your own content, delete unneeded slides, or embed selected material into your daily slideshow. It also means that external links are embedded. Easy peasy!! Please be aware that the slides themselves are not editable. This unit of work focuses on imaginative text, but also includes MANY Component A elements: *similes personification adverbs, nouns, verbs Tier 2 vocabulary past, present, future tense subject-verb agreement temporal, conditional, causal conjunctions types of sentences …and much more! Assessment tasks are embedded throughout the unit, with assessment opportunities highlighted. The culmination of the unit is a formal writing task whereby students create a multimedia text which is then collated into a class book and shared with a broader community. Simply put, this resource is everything you need to teach the new English curriculum in your Stage 2 classroom! All the hard work and preparation is done for you, so you can…teach! This is a huge unit (all of the units are huge but this one is particularly huge!). It will take up a significant amount of storage space, so I recommend storage on Google Drive or similar. Corresponding page numbers to the syllabus document from the NSW Department of Education are given in a coloured star in the corner of each slide. Please note: this slideshow focuses on the complete learning pathway of Component B, with Component A embedded throughout as “mini -lessons” or concepts. There is not a stand-alone slideshow for Component A. I have lots of other Literacy resources in my store (based on Australian content) so feel free to check them out. Happy reading!

The Sideways Orbit of Evie Hart follows the journey of twelve-year-old Evie Hart as she navigates the challenges of her final year of primary school. I use prompts like this as both pre and post assessments to allow for structured learning. This consists of a set of printable tarot cards, as well as suggested fun, age-appropriate activities they can be used for in the classroom.
