A microteach interview lesson that got me to the interview. An interesting revision lesson on aldehydes and ketones. The task revolves around 4 graded worksheets that the students complete based on their current knowledge - they determine this at the beginning of the lesson by reading the learning objectives on the powerpoint. These are:<br /> Grade A/A*<br /> To explain why nucleophilic addition reactions with acidified KCN can produce enantiomers.<br /> Grade B<br /> To outline the nucleophilic addition mechanism for the reaction of KCN followed by dilute acid.<br /> Grade C<br /> To describe the mechanism of nucleophilic addition for reduction reactions with NaBH4 (where H- is the nucleophile)<br /> Grade D:<br /> To describe the reactivity of aldehydes and ketones in terms of the position of the carbonyl group.<br /> <br /> Help sheets can be provided using the A-level CGP revision guide for this specification.<br /> In the word documents, these are the tasks (the grade A is a powerpoint), the first sheet contains the answers- the mechanisms need to be drawn out on the answer sheets and the sheet photocopied for peer-assessment.<br /> <br /> The plenary is an exam question aimed at that level, you will have to find these for yourself, as I cannot include these for copyright reasons.

Atomic Structure and Ionic Bonding KS3 and KS4 using chocolate biscuits.

This is a mixture of resources: powerpoints on atomic structure (lessons) and ionic bonding along with a word file showing pictures of atoms for the activities and a word document that explains what was done in the different lessons.<br /> In short, I have had to teach atomic structure to students of different abilities and different ages and in all cases using chocolate digestive atoms, icing sugar (shells) and chocolate drops (electrons) has helped students understand atomic structure. The biscuits are especially useful for low ability and younger KS3 students. For high ability year 9 students I also extended this task to ionic bonding and got the students making their chocolate biscuit atom, understanding how many electrons they needed to lose or gain for a full outer shell. The students then needed to go speed dating to find an atom or ion that would satisfy their needs and then create an ionic compound. <br /> Read the word document entitled chocolate biscuit lessons for full details.

This lesson was for year 9 students who were starting their GCSEs a year early. As part of this, they needed to revise states of matter. As I did not know their previous knowledge, the lesson is designed so that students can determine their current knowledge and then build on this. The students then assess their knowledge at the end.<br /> <br /> There are 5 tasks that the students do-task 1 being the most simple.<br /> All the information for the tasks is stated in the powerpoint - the tasks should be printed for the students to take (the activity document).<br /> For task 1 you will need a box containing different elements and compounds so that students can identify which are solids, liquids of gases.

Lesson on Fats, there are 2 lessons on lipids-one for high ability and one for middle ability for B1. There is also a practical in the lessons-testing for liquid fats using ethanol and filter paper for solid fats.<br /> LOs include:<br /> To be able to explain the importance of fats<br /> To be able to test for fats<br /> To be able to describe the structure of fats <br /> Note there is more detail on structure of fats in the higher ability (Sc1) lesson, although the learning objectives are the same. Again there is more detail than you can fit into one hour. <br /> The handout in the powerpoint is a diagram showing the breakdown of fats into glycerol and fatty acids, proteins into amino acids and starch into sugars etc. This can be found using google- it is not my diagram so I am not including it.<br /> The textbook mentioned is Biology activate.

Lesson on Carbohydrates, there are 2 sets of learning objectives one suggested for middle ability and one for high abilty.<br /> The powerpoint covers all possible tasks and includes a finding out activity, where students have to find out the uses of carbohydrates by plants and by man. This can be searched for on the internet. There is also the practical using benedicts solution for reduced sugars at the end of the powerpoint if you so wish to use it. All instructions are included in the powerpoint as I wrote the powerpoint for the new scheme of work.<br /> LOs: To understand the uses of carbohydrates in plants, animals and man in industry.<br /> To be able to explain the difference between mono-, di- and polysaccharides.<br /> To investigate the presence of reduced sugars in foods, using Benedict’s solution.<br /> To be able to explain why different saccharides are used for different things.<br /> You can choose which ones you want to use.<br /> There is over 1 hour worth of work here the lesson is designed for you to cherry pick what you want.

Lesson on Proteins following the new OCR gateway specification.<br /> LOs include:<br /> To know the functions of proteins in our body and explain the differences between protein molecules.<br /> To be able to describe the structure of a protein. <br /> To investigate the presence of protein in different foods-using the biuret test.<br /> All instructions for the practical and recording the results are included in the powerpoint.<br /> The lesson can be edited and has been written from a higher ability perspective, but can be easily edited for middle ability. The article that is referred to in the powerpoint is available on the web and a link is included in the powerpoint, in the notes under the relevant slide. Obviously, I cannot include the article as it is not mine to publish.
