A speaking activity to practice verbs like gustar. Students must speak to classmates in order to find someone who fits the description in each square. Sample dialogue is included at the bottom of the sheet. This can be played as traditional BINGO where students have to get a row of answers, or you can play until someone fills the entire card. After you are finished, review the answers by asking students the questions to confirm. (i.e. Teacher: ¿Te importan los derechos de los animales? Student: Sí, me importan los derechos de los animales). Encourage students to use complete sentences and the target language throughout the activity.

Then, students complete a true/false activity with questions designed to make students question sterotypes and pre-conceived ideas about Hispanic culture and Hispanics in the U.S. Finally, an exit ticket, students say one thing they have learned from the lesson. Visual Vocab Sheet and Notes - Profesiones y trabajos (Professions and jobs)

This notes packet includes: 1. A visual vocabulary sheet with 24 professions and jobs in Spanish 2. Notes sheets for students to learn vocab while staying in the target language by describing each profession saying where they work and what they work with 3. Blank spaces for students to add their own ideas To present this vocabulary, I broke students into groups and made each group responsible for filling out the chart for three professions. Groups then presented to the class, and students took notes during their classmates' presentations. It was a great way to present vocabulary in a student-centered way. The photo cards can also be printed, cut out, and used for games like charades or taboo.

Comparativos y Superlativos - Premios de teatro (Comparatives and Superlatives - Theater Awards)

In this lesson, students will practice comparatives and superlatives in the context of rating and judging musicals. It includes a powerpoint with vocabulary related to theater, video clips from five musicals, and a sheet to help students rate and discuss the musicals. First, students warm up by matching the musical with the description. Then, there is a brief review of important terms related to theater awards (scenery, costumes, choreography, etc.). Next, students watch brief video clips/trailers for five Broadway musicals (The Lion King, Wicked, Hamilton, Les Miserables, Wicked, and Evita) and rate each musical on each category. Finally, they choose one musical for each award (Best Costumes, Best Scenery, etc.) Students then practiced superlatives by conversing with partners about the musicals. To practice comparatives, I taped posters of each musical around the classroom, and students moved to each poster depending on which musical they had chosen for each award. Students then made sentences such as, "There are more people for The Lion King than for Evita," or, "There are as many people for Wicked as for Les Miserables," to practice comparatives of equality and inequality.

I used this as an example presentation before assigning a project to report on a sport from a Spanish-speaking country. However, this could easily be used as a cultural activity/presentation during a sports unit. Bounus points if you can find some jai alai-like equipment (or actual equipment) for the students to give it a try!

Interactive Reading Model - Alejandro Villanueva/Fútbol americano

An interactive reading model task based on a text about Spanish-born American football player, Alejandro Villanueva. The text adapted from a Spanish-speaking newspaper, La Opinión, with information on Villanueva as a player as well as some personal history. The Interactive Reading Model packet can be completed individually or in pairs and includes Preparation, Comprehension, Interpretation, Creation, and Extension tasks. Great for working with students on literacy skills, pre, post, and during reading strategies, and to review and enhance vocabulary during a sports unit. My students were intimidated by the text at first but surprised to find out how much they understood when using the Interactive Reading Model packet.
