This home-learning project invites you to write an adventure where you get to create your own God, hero or mythical creature. You’ll decide how your character came to be and make decisions along the way that will affect whoever you create and what happens to them. There will also be an opportunity to learn about other mythical figures that might inspire, repel or shock you. As well as creating a character, you’ll be able to create a ‘world’ they will inhabit. The project contains support, summarised information about Greek myths and legends, sentence starters, challenges and tasks that involve using more sophisticated vocabulary as well as a range of punctuation. I’ll introduce a few mythological creatures and legends to you; who will you introduce to me?

The resources are loosely based on the idea in the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books where students have the opportunity to select structural and language choices in their creative writing to decide which way their story goes. Nine Lives Hall focuses on structure. After walking through the doors of Nine Lives Hall, students get to decide whether to select a change in narrative perspective or dialogue. Do they withhold information about a mysterious portrait or do they zoom in on detail? After getting trapped in a secret passageway, does the pace of their writing speed up or slow down? At the end of their story, they have the opportunity to self-assess their work and discuss their intentions as a writer. There are some helpful sentence starters, as well, adding more support as well as extension activities. The Secret of Nine Crystals Cave has a similar layout but the focus is on language and different activities pertaining to the language choices made. Ideally, they are projects to be worked on independently at home as both resources have support and scaffolding to help students. If you have time to leave some feedback, I’d be really grateful. Are you ready to feel a few goose-bumps? This complete home-learning project, containing 64 slides, has a series of writing tasks and activities which are designed to enhance skills tested throughout secondary assessments and subsequently, GCSE papers. The eerie, spine-tingling and intriguing true mysteries in this project coupled with skills-based activities and writing challenges are designed to promote independent learning. Occasionally, there are also activities that require collaboration with someone else at home. It’s designed to provide a bit of variety, interest and fun for the many students who are learning from home at this time. There are shorter activities and challenges that culminate in a GCSE Language Paper 2 style paper; to accompany this power point there are two resources (A and B) that are to be used with the GCSE paper. Learners can attempt whatever they want to try. There are scaffolds and support providing sentence starters and ideas but also challenges making the project suitable for students of any ability who are keen to develop and enhance their skills …especially if you want to be spooked along the way! Please be aware, the project has a supposed photograph of a ghost and a few eye-witness accounts of spooky occurrences. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

This is an interesting and spine-tingling home-learning project that provides an insight into Borley Rectory, reputedly the most haunted house in England. With photographs, eye-witness accounts, different sources and extension activities focusing on the strange events, it’s mainly a practice for language paper 2 which students can work on at home. As well as developing summary skills, reading for information skills and comparative writing, the tasks are supported offering scaffolded help for those studying independently. An immersive home-learning project that allows students to delve into Shakespeare’s life and times by exploring the Globe theatre, creating their own Shakespearean insults, writing persuasive speeches inviting visitors to the Globe and creating their own scenes from a Shakespeare play (some ideas are included but students can choose any scene from any play.) As well as being creative and using any resources or materials they have at home, students also get a chance to evaluate their directorial decisions. There are useful and informative resources to accompany this power point and examples from me with scaffolded help to lend support and ideas. The powerpoint is divided into two lessons but students can use it as they wish; the important thing is to have fun.
