This powerpoint includes images and basic information about four major WWI battles: The Second Battle of Ypres, The Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passendaele.

This activity gives information on various diseases and conditions in WWI trenches. It then asks students to discuss how they would prevent those diseases if they were army generals. Students then discover the solution that WWI generals used. Diseases include rats, lice, trench foot, shell shock and poison gas.

This Powerpoint allows students to guess words that are common in Canada but are not well known elsewhere. It includes 18 words for the students to guess the definition and 5 objects for students to guess the function. This has been tested with 5-year-olds and 10-year-olds and they enjoy guessing the words and discovering life in Canada. This is a great resource for that extra five minutes of class when students finish work early or to supplement learning about Canada.

This resource gives information on the Schlieffen Plan and what living in a trench was life. For the Schlieffen Plan, students learn what the Germans assumed about the plan (ex. Britain would not defend Belgium) then discover what actually happened (ex. Britain joined the war to defend their ally.) Then, students will hear a story about living in the trenches from waking up in the morning to going to bed at nighttime.

This Powerpoint will teach students about the War Measures Act, a Canadian law during WWI that caused over 8000 people to be interned in camps. It also introduces the Halifax explosion, the largest man-made explosion before the nuclear bombs in Japan. Includes a starter activity.
