Reading Detectives - Quick Inference Teaching Challenges

(0)
Contains 10 lessons worth of inference activities
Sick of teaching inference using a long text and just a couple of questions? This booklet reverses that, with short texts used so that pupils can focus more on learning how to infer meaning from them. pupils are asked to justify their reasoning for each answer which is taken directly from the text. For each extract, pupils are also asked to come up with a title, which encourages them to show an understanding of the gist of the paragraph they have read. This booklet includes 10 inference activities and can be used with a variety of ages (KS2) and either as a class, group or individual resource.

Benefits:
- short texts
- whole class, guided group or intervention
- more focus on the skill than the actual reading
- suitable for a range of ages
- encourages pupils to always relate their answer back to the text
- encourages pupils' understanding of gist
- 10 activities included

Times Table Intervention or Whole School Programme

A whole school approach to boosting times tables
All resources included
Structured and includes answers
(Overview below)

Pupils work through in the order: 5,10,2,4,8,3,6,9,7,11,12.
Each practice and test has 1 ‘tricky teaser’ which tests some of the trickier multiplication facts that may be best ‘learned’.
Pupils practise their individual times table throughout the week and can either mark these practices themselves using the answer sheets provided or they can be marked by an adult. They then to one of these as a test at the end of the week. The answer sheets can either be printed or put up on the IWB.
Pupils have 3 minutes to do each test and need a score of 23/25 in order to progress to the next level.
Put a 3 minute timer on the IWB at the start of each practice and test.
Pupils then have 2-3 minutes afterwards to mark their work.
As pupils work through the colour levels, teachers can mark this off on the tracker (obviously there can be more fun and visual ways to represent this to pupils in their classroom setting). The tracker will probably need to be blown up to A3 or split onto 2 A4 pages.
Pupils work through the tests and repeat the 4 practices / tests each week.
Struggling pupils: complete 25 multiplication questions on their times table, omitting any division facts for the time being. They can still move onto the next ‘colour’ level but with the understanding that they will move onto division when they are ready / completed up to gold with just the multiplication facts.
High performing pupils: complete 25 mixed multiplication questions, both for practices and their weekly test but have a time limit of 2 and ½ minutes.
All of the above are editable, so you can adapt times, scores, tricky teaser questions for your class.

An amusing look at the main British Values in the style of Britain’s Got Talent. It can be performed by a class of different sizes as the number of pupils in the audience and in each act can be adapted. A few printed props may be needed but everything that you need should be easily accessible in a school.
