EDUQAS A LEVEL MUSIC - JAZZ: COOL JAZZ PRACTICE LISTENING TESTS

The term ‘Cool Jazz’ covers a wide range of music, and there is plenty that can be asked of students, but surprisingly few good quality resources.

As a Jazz nerd (and BBC Radio 2 and 3 Jazz producer), as well as classroom teacher, I’m pleased to present these sample questions, focussing on Cool Jazz, using recordings by:

• The Modern Jazz Quartet
• Miles Davis
• Frank Rosolino Sextet
• Chet Baker
• Art Blakey
• Lambert, Hendricks and Ross

There are three sample Question 5s, and two sample Question 6s (comparison between two recordings), including a vocal question.

• YouTube links with exact timings for all musical examples (correct as of publication)
• Full and detailed mark scheme
