CLIL scheme of work (2-3 lessons depending on ability) on the Peninsular Wars in Spanish and from the Spanish point of view.
It includes a PPTX and and Worksheet for students to complete.
List of tasks:
- Starter: Map of Europe during the Napoleonic Wars, where students have to categorise the European states between allies and enemies of the First French Empire.
- Main characters. Brief biographies of Joseph Bonaparte, Ferdinand VII of Spain, John VI of Portugal and of the Duke of Wellington. Students have to decide to whom does a list of statements apply to.
- Translation from Spanish to English of some of the introductory key ideas, plus matching exercise for some of the key terms.
- Listening activity (both recording and transcript inserted on the PPTX) for students to organise the succession of events since the French troops crossed the Pyrennes until the final battle in the south of France.
- Discussion (or writing exercise) on how Napoleon himself viewed the Peninsular Wars and their impact on the outcome of the Napoleonic Wars as a whole, based on an extract in Spanish from Ronald Fraser’s classic work.
- Video activity (video link inserted on both the PPTX and the Student Worksheet). Interview to Pérez Reverte and his novel “El Asedio”, which takes place during the French invasion. Multiple choice exercise.
- Reading of a review of the book with vocabulary search and questions in English to assess understanding.
- Reading of a short extract from the novel, followed by questions in the TL and a multiple-choice activity…
- Video link and activities for independent work on Goya’s “Los fusilamientos del 3 de Mayo” in the collections of the Prado Museum.
