The Life Skills STaRS programme is a PSHE resource for teachers that, across six lessons, helps young people recognise risk through age-appropriate scenarios, including the use of cleaning products, medicines, dangers around parks and lakes, etc. This year one resource is followed up in years two through four and uses our STaR decision-making model.

The programme prepares our children to make safe and healthy decisions today and into the future by practising using real-life situations. Written by teachers for teachers, our year group relevant PSHE teaching and learning resources respond to your needs and those of our children as they grow up in an ever-changing world.

The topics covered tackle key areas of the PSHE and computing curriculum, as well as areas teachers feel are important for today’s children. Through consultation with current KS1 and KS2 teachers, we have focused learning around the topics of:

• Medicines
• Feelings and Friendship
• Staying safe in and out of the home
• Difference and Diversity
• People who help us
• Risk and consequence
• Staying safe and managing time online
• Healthy Lifestyles

A fun, animated character, Ziggy the Resili-Ant, introduces and concludes lessons. Ziggy features in all our STaRS programmes, as well as our resources for years 5 and 6.

Each of the 30-45-minute lessons focuses on a story, which generates discussion and leads to learning tasks. Extension activities support learning at all levels of ability. Download links provide all lesson plans, resources, and supporting worksheets.

The Life Skills Stars programme encourages children to Stop, Think, and Remember (STaR). As they complete each lesson, they are rewarded with whole class stars, which are displayed on a class room poster.

These programmes were introduced in 2023, and we are actively seeking feedback on their effectiveness. After completing the STaRS programme, we ask all teachers to take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. We will evaluate your responses to ensure we achieve the programme’s outcomes against our framework.
