Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. These sets are aimed at beginner French students of all ages, focusing on***les jours de la semaine*** and les mois et les saisons de l’année. The target vocabulary also includes words such as aujourd’hui, demain, le mois dernier, le mois prochain and la saison prochaine to enable students develop their French vocabulary and to engage with gender agreement.

Additionally, ordinal numbers premier, dernier, deuxième etc provide a really useful language learning opportunity, and increase the challenge in a number of grids. Students have to apply their broader knowledge of French in order to know which word to search for in the grid, for example ***le deuxième jour de la semaine ?***. This makes the activity more comprehensive and engaging than a straightforward months and seasons of the year in French vocabulary exercise.

Each set features 10 differentiated word searches, with an increasing level of challenge. The grids are in landscape format, and have an accompanying answer key so that students can check their own responses. There is an accompanying French-English vocabulary list in both sets, featuring all the vocabulary used in the word searches.

This kind of activity is really versatile, and useful in a range of learning contexts: starters, refreshers, finishers. fun-time fillers or sub / cover lessons at any time during the school year, as well as during the period where this is the current language focus. Students benefit from revisiting the word searches over several weeks until they are absolutely confident with the range of vocabulary.
