Geography/Humanities unit of work centred on climate change, and the impact climate change will have on Sport in the future.
Students will learn about the process of climate change & why it’s a problem for sport. They will then investigate how sports can, and is fighting back to reduce its carbon footprint and become more sustainable. This will be followed by a look into how COP26 will impact on sports into the future. Literacy is a big component of this, with students accessing many articles to aid their learning.
Following this, students will work in groups where they select a sport & create a detailed, informative report which investigates sustainability in the sport. This project will take multiple lessons to put together and is an assessed piece of work (rubric included).
Finally, the groups will then present their reports to the rest of class (and maybe some guests!), which is also an assessed task.
Outline of unit is as follows:
Lesson 1 - what is climate change?
Lesson 2 - Why is climate change a problem for sports?
Lesson 3 - How can sport fight back?
Lesson 4 - Sport & COP26
Lesson 5-8 - Sport in 2050 Reports
Lesson 9-11 - Report Presentations
Designed as a revision tool for Year 8 class but can be effective for all KS3 & KS4 classes.
Includes everything from river features, to processes to flooding.
Key terms all included and defined.
Annotated illustrations on all major river features.
Revision tips and activities littered throughout document.
Links to useful websites.
Case studies for flooding - Boscastle, UK (developed country) & Bangladesh (developing country).
Enquiry-based, student-led unit of work on the topic of Climate change, with the COP 26 Conference as a starting point.
Students will learn about COP 26 through discussions, research and videos. They will investigate/evaluate it’s importance by creating an infographic/poster on COP 26. I have included some model infographics/posters created by my students for inspiration within the lesson PPT.
Students will then dive into learning about climate change as a topic. This is a student-led, peer-teaching activity, where students will be in small groups creating lessons (or ‘teaching episodes’) on various climate change sub-topics. Each group will then present/teach their sub-topics to the group.
There are 3 assessments in this unit:
The COP 26 Poster/infographic
The teaching episodes/presentations (I have a success criteria included for this)
End of unit assessement - I use the free online platform to create a comphrensive multiple-choice and true/false quiz based on the content delivered during the presentations. I can share the code for the Socrative Quiz I created - please drop me a message for this :)
Outline of unit is as follows:

Lessons 3 & 4 - COP 26 Infographic
