In this creative activity students are encouraged to identify their emotions, isolate why they feel that way and explore healthy and constructive ways to manage them is very important. Students are encouraged to create their own “Feelings Ferris Wheel” which includes the different feeling carriages. Just like a Ferris Wheel, our feelings come and go. We won’t feel that way forever. There are no good or bad emotions, but there are good and bad ways of expressing (or acting on these emotions). Learning how to express emotions in acceptable and constructive ways is a separate skill that is built on the foundation of being able to understand emotions. Within this mini-lesson and craft we will explore the following: 1.Emotional Literacy – understanding feelings and emotions 2.Isolate that feeling and attribute where it came from. 3.Identify your individual needs when you feel that way, including coping strategies. In this craft activity, students are encouraged to explore the following emotions: sad, scared, surprised, grumpy, excited, embarrassed, happy, curious, confused, bored, angry, proud and scared. Teenagers and young people are faced with many influences when it comes to alcohol, drugs and peer pressure. Effective drug education can play an important counterbalancing role in shaping a normative culture of safety, moderation and informed decision making. This portfolio takes a harm and risk mitigating approach to provide the knowledge to support individuals to make sound choices and decisions. There are a total of 30 Partying Safely Scenario Cards which all include a variety of relatable and realistic scenarios for teenagers to discuss and reflect upon. These scenarios explore a number of realistic situations in which the student is encouraged to explore whether the situation demonstrates a risky or safe choice in relation to partying. There are 15 scenarios which illustrate a safe partying choice and 15 scenarios which illustrates a risky partying choice. This is a great activity to also explore and reinforce the importance of reflecting on behavioural choices and their associated consequences. The student may require some reflective questioning should they need prompting. Each scenario supports understanding, discussion and reflection. Behaviour Support: Inappropriate V’s Appropriate Things To Say The following activity was developed to support a child’s ability to reflect upon comments that they make and the impact of these. The activity includes • 1 x illustration of child with open and happy mouth (symbolizing things a child can say) • 1 x illustration of a shocked child with mouth closed (symbolizing things a child shouldn’t say) • Question/Statement cards that children can cut out which contains a comment that either can be pasted on the mouth open (something nice/good/okay/acceptable to say) or pasted on the mouth closed (something you shouldn’t say as its mean/not nice) This activity also includes some spare cards for either the teacher, students (group or individual) to write on as examples of things they feel are appropriate/inappropriate to support the development of insight and judgment. There are a total of 36 cards which include a particular behaviour and choice which occur within a school environment. These include within the classroom, at recess, in the corridor, on a bus and in the playground. On each card, the student as asked to reflect on the situation and choose whether it is a helpful or unhelpful choice. The student may require some reflective questioning should they need prompting as to how and why a behaviour may be helpful or unhelpful. This is a great self-reflection workbook that can be utilized in its entirety or as separate activity worksheets. There is a total of 16 pages which encourages self reflection around the students level of anxiety level and introduces the concept of concurrent emotions (i.e.: that one emotion can exist with others). This resource primarily focuses on anxiety and worried but also explores the following emotions which exist concurrently. These include: anger, disgust, disappointment, excitement, furious, tired, scared, nervous, lonely, innocent, confused, embarrassed, happy, frustrated, worried, sad, shocked, surprised, proud, irritated. There are a total of 16 worksheets which each one explores a social/emotional trigger for anxiety. For example, public speaking or trying something new.
