I love making my classroom engaging and exciting with great resources! A beautifully presented resource to engage little learning minds is such a treat. I was inspired so much by the many talented teacher-authors out there, that I started making my own!
In doing so, I have found I have a passion for English. Who'd have thunk it!?
I love teaching English - and creating resources to making reading and writing an opportunity to smile, rather than to moan :)
Enjoy!

You have stumbled across a great, stress free way to teach paragraphing! You’ll have your class writing independent paragraphs in no time if you take the time to teach them using this simple outline. Hamburger Paragraphs can be used for any kind of report writing.
In this instance, the worksheets have been designed to teach the EXPOSITION structure in a very simple beginner format in the form of a book review. I introduced the concepts of paragraphing in Term 1 (Year 3 in Australia) with this simple tool. The kids loved it - and so did I! We've never looked back! In this example, the children’s task was to write an exposition outlining their opinions and reasons for why they liked (or didn't like) a fiction book of their choice. The class example I've provided is more complex than what I would expect a Year 3 child to write by themselves in Term 1. It was a good model to help them to aim high.
There are five hamburgers - one for each paragraph. Ultimately, you will end up with a 5 paragraph expostion which can be written as simply or as detailed as your children are capable.

This is a simple quick idea to use for a reading rotation activity which will help your students to read with the author's message or theme in mind.
This product contains:
-24 high quality bookmarks that you can print and laminate to add to your reading group resources (4 are blank for student's own interpretation of the author's message/theme).
Throughout narratives, there are often themes where the author either intentionally or unintentionally conveys messages to the reader. A theme is usually a message that you can apply to your own life. There may even be multiple themes within a story.
Examining the theme helps when discussing the main idea or summarising a story and uses higher order reading skills such as interpretation and reflection where students have to find the evidence within the text to stake their claim.
Common themes in literature are: friendship, courage, perseverance, honesty, kindness, loyalty.
I used this idea with Year 3 (Australia) toward the end of the year when we had done a lot of work on higher order reading skills already. It is probably best suited for middle primary/elementary grades due to the need to gather textual evidence to prove their choice of theme. Children love being reading detectives to root out all the clues to support their opinion on the theme/message of the story.
Reading can be fun and engaging with my author's message/theme bookmarks!

Students can have a take home folder to learn sight words each week as well as reinforcing these daily in your classroom English program. The CVC words can be taught in class. They need to be taught to blend the sounds together. The pages I have designed will reinforce letter formation using the Queensland Beginner’s Alphabet. These pages may be sent home for homework. Alternatively, these can be completed in class. Children need to make small sentences using their weekly sight words and CVC words. As the weeks accumulate, they will have more word choices.
With consistent practice, by the end of 10 weeks, your students will have learnt 40 sight words, 60 CVC words and will be able to read 5 stories. Important reading skills are also practiced, not just phonics and sight words. Children become real readers and comprehenders of early text very early in their reading journey.

Expression is so important because it helps a reader comprehend and retain what he or she just read. Some of the most important components of expressive reading are fluency, vocal inflection, tone, tempo, and body language.
Expression is also very important in public speaking. When you have something to say, research shows the tone of your voice makes up 38% of the impact of the message you are trying to communicate, and body language makes up a whopping 55%!
Get your students to become strong readers, and public speakers by following the activities in this pack.
There are four reading skills to be practised in this kit to help coach an expressive and fluent reader and speaker.
1. Chunk phrases and use punctuation.
2. Work on fluency.
3. Work on intonation.
4. Say it like the character or live reader would.
Within each skill, there are four stages of teaching based on the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model. Your class can be divided into the four groups respectively according to ability/level/readiness.
Focus Lesson (I Do, You Watch)
Guided Instruction (I Do, You Do too)
Collaborative Learning (You Do with Others and I watch)
Independent Learning (You Do on your Own and others watch)
Included are: mini posters, a RUBRIC, and several texts to practice on.
Watch your students COME ALIVE in their reading expression and ability to transfer that to a public speaking context. Happy teaching!
