I wrote this 5 week scheme of work for my GCSE English group. They were struggling with narrative writing and so I wanted to inspire with them with some effective short story writing. So who better than the master of the macabre - Roald Dahl? In this series of lessons students read a range of his stories and many of the tasks are linked to revising key skills that will be used in their Language exams. Included here are the Week 4 lessons. There is a PowerPoint presentation to guide students (and teachers) through all of the activities. This week’s lessons uses Dahl’s story The Umbrella Man and covers language skills for Paper 1 Questions 3 and 5. A copy of the story is included. Week 1 lessons and an overview of the whole unit of work is available as a free resource. Additional weeks, along with the stories, can be purchased separately or as part of a bundle.

This is part 1 of an 8 week unit of work preparing students for their AQA Paper 2 English Literature exam. This scheme of work assumes that students have already been introduced to all the poems (presentation on each poem also available separately). A PowerPoint guiding teachers (and students) through all the activities is included as are all the handouts and worksheets referred to. In this week students are introduced to the requirements of the poetry exam question and they then follow activities to develop a deeper understanding of the poem ‘Remains’. The lessons/activities include: overview of the format of the exam question; linking the theme activity; introduction to SLIME as a structure to poetry analysis; prompt questions about structure in the poem; prompt questions about language and imagery in the poem; planning and writing a paragraph; revision flashcard and a homework sheet to develop higher level thinking.
