USA Southern Culture (Civil Rights)

This lesson ppt is designed to teach students about the background to American Civil Rights. In my experience having lived in South Carolina for 3 years, I feel that English students fail to make a connection between race issues and American History. As part of our KS3 unit on Civil Rights I created this lesson to be used as a background explanation to the Civil Rights movement. We normally teach Rosa Parks / Alabama first then do this as a second lesson before moving onto MLK and Malcom X, the KKK etc.

Protest movement song analysis and creation

This lesson is a follow on from the Civil Rights movement aimed at Year 9 students. The idea is to analyse protest songs and the idea behind a protest song and to create it and perform it to the rest of the group. Within Music this can be adapted to a band or musicians. From a History perspective students are just expected to read it back to the class unless they want to accompany it with music or performance which will be a homework assignment.

QI - 'Quite Interesting' History Quiz

Although a 'Fun' activity my students go nuts for this and request it at the end of term over videos . Helps with core history skills, such as source analysis, Interpretation , listening and public speaking. It also re-inforces behaviour for learning as the students discover calling out, spoiling or making a silly coment will lose them points. Teacher might need an understanding of the quiz QI , but it is a really enjoyable lesson which ticks a lot of boxes at this time in the year QI2 added with extra slides but a few cross overs. Copy paste new slides into QI 1 for 100 min lessons etc.
