WAR WRITING LESSON - a series of activities to improve use of punctuation. Includes a range of illustrations about the navy at Scapa Flow and letters and eye witness accounts to help students understand the context behind the sources. Written for KS3 Year 9 Middle ability - but easily adapted for a range of classes to complement any scheme of work centered upon the First World War. Explores the often ignored naval contributions.

KS3 English Language skills. A series of 2 lessons based upon the novel Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. Focus is on the first and last chapters. Students will need to read and identify the language techniques used by Collins to create a sense of fear and suspense. Examples given of the techniques which could be used and sample analytical paragraphs to model for the class. Differentiation in the depth of the analytical paragraph is suggested, and in the selection of the language or structural technique. Chapter extracts not supplied. A grid designed for flexibility - for the students to complete and add as they wish with any relevant historical events, poetic and literary movements and the dates of famous writers. In addition- the poets from the Anthology are placed on the timeline so that students can more clearly understand the contextual background to the poems. Students found this very helpful.

A collection or resources designed for Year 9 students to explore the levels of power in the play - between Prospero, Ariel and Caliban. The focus is on writing and improving an assessment entitled "Is Prospero a character obsessed by power- or is he a man of his age?" Includes paintings for discussion and extracts from the play for students to analyse. Slides focus their attention on use of language particularly imagery. Explores how the Elizabethans viewed other cultures.
