This is a complete lesson on wiring a plug and electrical safety that I prepared for a Y10 class. Start off by describing the main parts and safety features of a plug. A video on the Earth wire safety feature is also used. A worksheet “Fault Finding Plug” has to be completed successfully before students are then allowed to wire their own (demonstrator) plugs. Starter activity to describe energy in a sentence and then describe energy transfers taking place as a cyclist cycles up and down a hill. An overview of different energy store and different transfer methods. This is a complete lesson on colour that I prepared for a Y8 class. Refreshes refraction from a previous lesson and then a prism dispersion demonstration. Students then make up their own mnemonics for the colours in the spectrum and then primary and secondary colours are then introduced followed by a discussion on reflection and absorption. A powerpoint that I created to review the vector and scalar quantities and then move on to the difference between displacement and distance. It includes several worked examples (featuring my dog, Peach) that use simple trigonometry (SOCAHTOA) and Pythagora’s theorom. I used this with a Y9 tutee but it could be useful for Y10/Y11. This is a complete lesson on refraction that I prepared for a Y8 class. Starter task refreshes reflection using a ray box and mirrors to guide light around an obstacle course. Introduce the idea of refractions followed by a practical investigation. PPT uses the idea of a car driving across mud to explain refraction. This is a complete lesson on potential and kinetic energy that I prepared for a Y9 class. Starter activity using a roller coaster example to relate back to a previous lesson on gravitational potential energy. A PHET simulation is introduced (embedded into the PPT) to show the transfers between potential and kinetic energy occurring for a skateboarder. The importance of using the correct units is reinforced followed by some worked examples showing how to use the Ep and Ek equations in typical questions. This is a complete lesson on convection that I prepared for a Y9 class. Starter activity to think about types of heat transfer occurring in a heated saucepan. A recap of conduction from a previous lesson is followed by an introduction to convection in fluids. The example of a radiator is explained followed by a lava lamp demonstration (I had to buy my own!) and a video of potassium permanganate in a beaker. As a class they are asked to think about what is happening in a hot air balloon. A worksheet (which can be differentiated with key words easily) is used to cement learning.
