Included in the pirate show download this is a game board for KS1 to help children learn coordinates in a fun way. Similar rules to the style of ‘battle ships’ children have to hide coins (counters) by selecting squares by identifying the corresponding coordinates and locate their partners hidden treasure by calling out coordinates. I never get bored of telling this story to children, I just love the way they enjoy the naughty seagulls stealing his lunch. It's also one of my favourite displays to create with blues of the sea and contrast of the Lighthouse. There's so many literacy opportunities- speech bubbles, instructional writing, descriptive writing, the list goes on...

This learning chart is to help the pupils identify whether they are learning a new fact, skill or developing their understanding at the start of a new topic/lesson. It can be edited and added to as the topic progresses. Actions could be given to help children remember the learning , such as thumbs up for knowledge, building block hands for skills and tapping the head for understanding. The chart is to be used during the teacher input and enlarged to be displayed throughout the topic. Objectives from the topic can be added and used as a reference for assessment. Objectives: KS1 Maths, Year 2 and adapted for Year 1. Add numbers using concrete objects and pictorial representations, e.g. number squares, to add 1- and 2-digit numbers. Add/subtract mentally two 2-digit numbers by counting on in 10s and 1s. Recognise and use symbols for pence (p) and use coins to solve simple problems involving addition and subtraction. Targets: I can add and subtract 10’s and 1p coins. I can find totals using coins up to 100. Year 1 Adding 1 more/1 less Finding totals up to 20. Notes for teachers Children can complete the challenge individually or in pairs. Timing the activity helps keep the children focused, keep the totals a secret until the ‘big reveal’ to add competition. Ideally it would be good if the children use real 10p and 1p coins.
