This is a fully differentiated guide to building skills for the paper one GCSE exam. All of my resources have been tried and tested, and work well as a full lesson or one-to-one support. This resource is also part of a bundle and has helped my students to prepare for their exams.

The lesson provides students with an introduction to the writer Allen Edger Poe and one of his most important pieces of writing, A Tell-Tale-Heart. The lesson begins with a fact-finding task, then progress to looking at the text and the Gothic conventions that are presented.
There are tasks for the class to identify quotations linked to key images.
The class will then move on to attempt an exam-style question, there is also a written example to help them to construct a well-written response.
This is a fully differentiated booklet looking some of the key aspects of A Christmas Carol. The booklet explores several important themes of the story and also includes a creative writing task that guides students to producing their own piece of writing. This is a fully differentiated, thirteen-slide lesson building skills for functional skills level one and two. The lesson uses the topic of Halloween to develop a deeper understanding of the new exam format. There are many opportunities for AFL and there are both reading and writing tasks to practice and build confidence within English.
This is a fully differentiated lesson helping teachers to conduct a diagnostic assessment in class to understand the needs and ability of their students. The lesson focuses on the theme of the weekend and has opportunities to assess reading and writing skills needed from E1-level 2 of the new functional skills specification.

This is a fully differentiated two-three-hour lesson looking at the key questions/skills of the paper one exam: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing. Due to the restrictions put in place by Covid, the lesson can be taught without the need for additional printing or resources, making it ideal for either face-to-face or on-line teaching.
The lesson looks at the novel, The Boy In Stripped Pyjamas which is a fantastic text to help introduce learners to the exam paper.

This is a fully differentiated lesson looking focusing largely on chapter seven of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The lesson works well for revision as it tests learner’s ability to recall the key chapters within the novella and they key events.
The lesson moves on to look at the theme of good and evil and how this is conveyed in key sections of the text. The lesson works well both face-to-face as well as online and have been tried and tested with my own groups.

This is a fully differentiated lesson looking at the poem, “War Photographer” by Carole Satyamurti. The poem looks in-depth at the role and risks of being a War Photographer and how this could affect our interpretation of the poem.
The lesson takes learners through each stanza to help them gain a good understanding to then apply to an exam-style question. In addition, there is a model response to help learners to craft their own response.
