This is a great lesson on Sports injuries, suitable for both biology and physical education teachers.
The lesson consists of
1. A powerpoint presentation which includes an activator/start-up activity and information on the different types of sports injuries - their causes, physical problems, treatment and prevention. It includes information on the value of warming up and cooling down.
2. A worksheet for the students which follows along with the powerpoint presentation.
3. An answer sheet (key).
My students love the activity! I have included some hyperlinks to appropriate YouTube videos, however, feel free to edit or add!
Genetics: Haemophilia YouTube activity
This worksheet accompanies the first 15 minutes of a YouTube video called 'Haemophilia and Porphyria: Royal Diseases from tainted Blood': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmQwMllhCUM
The video clearly outlines how the X-linked disease has traveled from Queen Victoria, a carrier, through many Royal European bloodlines. While watching the video, students have to discuss and answer questions about x-linked crossesin real-life, historical situations and they have to draw up punnet squares to support their answers.
The historical context ads an extra layer of interest in the subject of genetic crosses and x-linked inheritance specifically. My students loved to do this worksheet and it created many opportunities for discussion and debate!
This is a 25 slides powerpoint presentation about Inheritance and Genetics. It covers cell types, chromosomes and human karyotypes, basic DNA information, locus, allele, heterozygous and homozygous chromosome pairs, dominant and recessive traits, and inheritance of dominant, recessive and x-linked diseases with pedigrees and explanations in diagrams.
CLIL Classification Lesson: Vertebrates, Invertebrates and Plants, includes Lesson Plan.
In a typical CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) Lesson, learners are ecouraged and motivated to speak about subject-specific content in a fun and engaging way. Includes a lesson plan!
The whole lesson plan involves scaffolding to help enhance learners' understanding by comparing and contrasting in multi-modal ways: observing, speaking, listening, discussing ideas using appropriate subject vocabulary and kinaesthetics (walking, moving, arranging and rearranging). It provides the learners with an appropriate reason for speaking to each other.
Whiteboard activity: Activates speaking about and writing appropriate subject vocabulary and content which learners already know.
Powerpoint slides (as wall items): teaches subject vocabulary and content which will be used in the activities. Helps explain both subject vocabulary and content by visualising the members of the animal and plant kingdoms and taxons.
My students love this activity as it gets them out of their seats and discussing where to place each wall item (picture, photo or words) to compete a wall display of animal and plant taxons!
