This is from a series of posters I made for revision of the characters in Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers. They each display quotes that would be useful to revise for the GCSE exam. This is poster is of Sammy Johnstone - Mickey’s elder brother. These can be printed out in dinky A5 for revision booklets, A4 for ordinary class use or in A3 for wall displays. I’ve started adding new characters to my Frankenstein series, so Victor needed a bit of an upgrade and is now digitally produced. Wahey! He is from a series of posters I created in order to help revision of characters for GCSE. There are a number of uses for these posters. When printed in A3, they make great classroom displays, while A5 is the ideal size for individual student revision booklets. I found A4 just right for classroom activities, which can include asking students to link the quotes and comments to a given theme. They can also have areas blanked out for the students to fill in (via correction fluid and photocopying, or by uploading onto a Powerpoint slide and covering areas with shapes). Alternatively, the posters can serve as inspiration for students to create their own versions for other characters and/or texts. Also currently available in the Frankenstein series are The Creature, Robert Walton, Elizabeth Lavenza, and Justine Moritz, while coming soon are Henry Clerval, Alphonse, Caroline, and the DeLacey family. They each display quotes and comments that would be useful to revise for the GCSE English Literature exam. This poster is of Benjamin, Boxer’s faithful donkey friend. Featured in the background is a reminder of who Benjamin represents: the intellectuals who stood by and did not oppose Stalin, the elders who had reached an age where it didn’t matter so much to them, and arguably the Mensheviks. I have included reminders of Orwell’s allegory in all of the posters in this series. This is from a series of posters I have created to support revision of the characters in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. This poster is of Snowball, with the image in the background serving as a reminder of who he represents: Trotsky. I have included reminders of Orwell’s analogy in all of the posters in this series. These turn out well regardless of the size in which they are printed. A5 are useful as individual booklets for students, while A4 seem the best for general class use. If using for display, they look great in A3. Teachers have used these posters in a number of different ways. It can be really effective to ask students to make links between each trait or quote and a given theme of the novel. Explaining what is significant about the quotes and comments in the poster means they practise expanding on their answers and gain a deeper understanding of what the writer has intended. I created this for the revision of Frankenstein at GCSE level. This is a multiple round team quiz. It can be given to individuals but it works better with teams because it encourages them to discuss the myriad of potential answers. Each slide has the answers in its notes. Some rounds (such as the picture and music ones) have answers which are not so definitive. If a student gives a different answer and can justify why they have chosen it, allow them the point, as this is where the revision is happening. I tend to do a round and then ask them to swap papers for marking. This means you can keep a running total for each team and make it more competitive. For the music round, I access Youtube. If your school does not allow you access, I recommend downloading the tracks and making a playlist on your phone or laptop. The objects round is optional. Prior to the quiz lesson, you can set a homework task - students must choose an object that symbolises one of the characters and be prepared to give their reasons why. If they do the task well and there is a decent range of different characters, it will work as a round. Alternatively, they could be like my class where every single member 'forgot' to do their homework... I have a similar quiz for Romeo and Juliet, so please look at my other resources.
